Battlemage or Warrior?

Post » Sun Aug 12, 2012 4:40 am

I just bought dawnguard and now I have a level 15 battlemage/spellsword, primary targeting on one-handed, destruction and archery (crossbow!). I also sneak sometimes. Now after a while I realised that I will eventually make a vampire character (with this battle-mage I joined the dawnguard), and therefore I maybe should save the magic for the vampire. Should I use the console to remove the destruction perks and put them into block? Or does a warrior get boring a while? What is the strongest and/or funniest of Battlemage and Warrior?

I prefer Battlemages. A lot more diverse.

I tried using a full fledged warrior once and I didn't find it fun. The same old slashing away at your enemies can get quite boring. Though, that is only me. Battlemage is probably my favorite type of class, as my main character is a Battlemage and I love it. You have more variety of things to use in a fight other then the sword you wield. A Battlemage can handle nearly any situation.

Battlemage is more fun IMO. I did have a pure warrior build but I discarded it.

Either will work.

A warrior will do far more damage, based on the way the game is balanced, but will have fewer long-range attack options (unless you master archery and switch a lot). To close with an enemy, you'll need to master and use the Become Ethereal or Whirlwind Sprint shouts.

A battlemage can balance magic with one hand and a weapon with the other, allowing greater versatility. Destrruction is relatively weak, but will hit distant targets. I've heard good things about Illusion, but have yet to play a character that mastered it. In either case, you have less ability to do sheer damage.

One nice thing about Skyrim's classless system is that if you do pure warrior and don't like it, you can study magic after the fact. My Imperial started as a pure Two-hander, but I wanted to diversify him, so he learned One-hand and Destruction as well. He's not as strong as he would have been if I'd started out there (due to perk allocation), but he can definitely handle himself with a variety of weapons and combat styles.

Thanks for the answer, but beacuse im eventually going to make a vampire I will probably make a spellsword for that, so it feels kinda wasted to make 2 spellswords, amiright?

You guys REALLY seems to enjoy battlemage! Maybe I should stick to that, beacuse I guess my vampire battlemage will have frost magic so it won't be exactly the same. Thanks for your good opinions and thoughts, keep em coming!

Also, and many people consider this a minor-exploit, if you get your Illusion to 50 and get the perk Aspect of Terror, it boosts damage on the fire spells Flames and Firebolt to the point where it is very viable, basically right at the point in the game where Destruction tends to get quite weak.
