I want to become a very good mage, but damn i hate the College of Winterhold.
Do you need the college to become a good mage, or can you also become one without it.
If you can, what is a good way?

Yeah, apart from the spell vendors I can't imagine it would be much different. Just go about your business as a mage without going to the college.

All high level spells must be bought from College. You don't need to do the questline but you need to at least access College for the spells

Yes, that's right. I do it all the time, especially as a Destruction spellsword, since that Destruction vendor elf lady is the one that stops you on the bridge. If you join but *never* walk up the path to the college gates, then she'll always stay right at the foot of the bridge. Makes it a lot easier/faster to meet her to buy spells, soul gems and Destruction training without having to find her somewhere on the college grounds every time.

Does the MQ not grant you access to the college?
