I'm stuck on this on. I need to find a third person to assist in the Pale in order to become Thane. So far I've retrieve the captain's void salt and got the book for the blacksmith. What other favors are there to perform for the people in the Pale?

I think I just got rid of the nightmares and killed a giant, + what you said.

If that doesn't work check the web for what quests are in the pale.

yeah help with the nightmares... should do the trick. or just ask the jarl's steward for more work if he has any.

I solved the nightmares and killed the giant for the Jarl first. Then I got the quest to assist the people of the Pale. Still sitting at 2/3. I did one of the bounties, which didn't seem to count toward the assisting total. I guess I could try another one.
