Lucky for me today is one of my regular days off work, so i got the wonderful chance of playing Brink the second it became available via steam to unlock up until now. So i guess its been about 12 full hours (holy crap ive been sitting here for 12 hours).
First and foremost let me just get this out there in the open, Brink IS a solid game. Ive scanned over some of the reviews and quite honestly I am not sure what game some of these reviewers are playing but in the last 12 hours I can honestly say i have not run into any of the problems they have run into yet there have been a few.
Lets start with the cons
1) Lag has been an issue tonight, especially when you do it straight off the campaign mode and set it to public the matchmaking doesnt seem to take latency into account for this so you can get some laggy matches, using the internet server browser though i have been playing in full games all night/morning long in games with less then 50ms for me.
2) The AI when left to its own ends simply isnt very efficent. It wont get the objectives done and will just simply stand there in a nice line and get plowed over there were times i was able to throw a single grenade and knock down 5 or 6 bots at the same time and walk over and melee them all to death.
3) Leveling speed is a bit to fast. My first character is already level 20 and was level 20 for the last 4 or 5 hours.
4) The map design is a little questionable especially on the escort missions there are a few to many choke points the end result is a bad stalemate unless one side really screws up.
PROS
1) I have been having an absolute blast playing as a heavy body style engineer using the gatling gun and the other various heavy machine guns. The turrets are a blast to use especially the heavy one. On any objective where something needed to be defended I was able to setup my turret and pre-spin up the gun and then since i had two buddies playing with me tonight one was a medic and the other a solider they just keep feeding me ammo and health basically turning me into an unstoppable killing machine. Of course when the enemy team finally got smart and really started focus firing on me then i finally went down but really. Its been fun as hell.
2) Team work is extremely well rewarded, you level up incredibly fast if you work with your team and feed them buffs and actually DO the objectives like you are supposed to. Me and my two other friends all hit level 20 at about the same time just because we were rolling around together completeing the challenges together and then joining games together and just wrecking shop the classes work together in unison so well especially when you have various weapon types. Me with my gatling gun was basically suppressing the entire enemy team while my friends were picking off individuals with the bolt action rifles and my turret was doing the cleanup work.
Look i could drone on all day about the pros and cons but when it comes down to it i find BRINK to be a solid game. There are some issues but the FUN i have had playing tonight outweighs any problems i came across. I dont even mind that my first character is already max level as there are so many customization options i can keep on switching rolls and have a blast. Here in a few i plan on starting up a resistance character and maxing him out (wanted to do security first they look cooler to me imo)
If you enjoy games like TF2 or enemy territory you will enjoy the hell out of brink. if you are a COD monkey or CS monkey chances are you will not. its really that simple.
