Is being a Thane required to buy lands?

Post » Thu Nov 15, 2012 3:15 pm

Seeing as this is in the holds where you can't buy a house in the main city. I can imagine the Jarl's will say "We don't have a house in the city right now, but we do have a property outside if you're interested". :P

Haha, well since it's in the hold and not the city itself, it might work out. "Yeah, yeah, just stay the hell out of my town, go to the woods."

Hmm, that's actually a good guess, I don't know if that'd be how to do it, but I'm accepting it as the most knowledgeable way for now :o

I doubt you need to be thane.

I think it would be an awesome feature if Thanes can purchase more land, or bigger plots. Perhaps they'd be able to hire hold guards to protect their homes? For example, a Whiterun Guard stationed at the Thane of Whiterun's property.

Not sure, but that was my guess earlier. It'd be nice if that wasn't the case because I don't think I'm Thane in Falkreath. I couldn't find anyone else to assist.

Picking crops for farmers counts as helping someone, as does selling firewood to the innkeeper.

Easiest way to do thane quests to help citizens is find any farm in that hold, go pick a potato or any crop, then sell it to the person who lives/works at the farm. 1 potato counts as a citizen quest. too easy.

Oh I'm sure there's people I can help, just seeing as how I'm like the Dragonborn, protector of everything good and all that stuff you think they could find someone else to chop wood, pick veggies and follow that talking dog around.

You know, I'm too good for that stuff.

But in all seriousness you're right. Time to do some assisting...

I agree It would be nice if it wasn't, I have winged before about Skyrim being restrictive. Being able to get land and build a house if your starting with a new character could make for some really good roleplay.

It would be cool if being Thane of Falkreath or the Pale had some tangible reward to it.

I think you have to purchase the land, but don't know if you have to be a thane to do so.

I'm pretty pumped about having my own personal Bard. Now that's some Thane worthy stuff.

Oh, and I wanna use that huge new bread oven that looks like a smelter. Primitive technology, but cool nonetheless.

Would not surprise me if we had to be Thane of the hold in order to buy land there. My first character is already Thane of everything, and my second is only procrastinating over one quest, would only take 10 minutes for her to be Thane of everything. My third character is not that ambitious, he has one tiny house and that will probably do unless he finds a good looking Orc to marry.

I hope if being thane is required, that the bug with regaining the thane title in Riften after Maven takes over gets fixed.

I already had the title when I single-handedly won the civil war for the imperials; I regained the title in the Pale and Winterhold, but can't get it back in Riften. Maven mentioned buying a house the first time I talked to her (I already had it); after that there was no dialog options at all.

Even if Riften isn't a buying option, it's still needs to be fixed.

You know it might be a requirement. The three build locations Hjaalmarch(Mothral), Falkreath and The Pale(Dawnstar) are all minor holds where a house wasn't previously available. So it might not be to unreasonable you need to earn the title of thane before you can buy the initial deed.

Just keep doing favors for folk in the Rift until its available. I find Maven and some replacement Jarls never ask you to help the people of their hold you simply have to do it yourself. So go through Riften, Ivarstead, Shor's Stone and other locations in The Riften helping people out. That aside it be irrlevant as The Rift isn't a location you can build the house.
