I set my alarm for midnight this morning so I could get up and play for a few hours. I am amazed at how many people are already so adept at this game. I must admit that I'm a bit of a noob. I played Morrowind back in the day. I tried Daggerfall, didn't like it. Tried Oblivion, but never really played much of it. I saw the Skyrim commercial, and I've been itching for a new RPG, so I wanted to jump right on that bandwagon.

With that said, I've been a PC gamer for a long time. I've never liked console games, and I hate controllers. I am a mouse and keyboard person. So I've been disappointed with most of the games I've played on my PC because you can tell they've been ported with crappy controls for PC users. This game isn't too bad, but I'm wondering what people use for their set up?

I have a 9 button mouse. I was a Quake/Unreal person and I used the right mouse button to walk and then the keyboard to strafe and crouch and all of that. Right now, I have it set up so my left hand rests on the keyboard controlling walking, jumping, crouching and all of that... and the mouse left button left hand, right button right hand... middle button use... etc. Maybe it's just because it was late and I was tired, but it just didn't feel very natural to me. I am trying to find a configuration that will allow me to get into the game without having to look at the keyboard. Q for Favorites is one that I hate because it's clear on the other side. TAB seems to be used for a lot of things as well.

I tried Modern Warfare and I could never get used to W-A-S-D and all of those buttons right there... one reason I svck at it.

Does anyone have an optimal set up they could recommend? I can't imagine you play with the default buttons? I'm thinking about getting a better/newer mouse with more game buttons. I've seen people with little game controllers for the left hand that fit better than a standard keyboard.

Oh, and after 3 hours of early morning playing, I must say I was immersed. I felt a bit clunky and out of it... but I was able to manage okay. Figured out how to case spells and all of that. I'm playing a High Elf, so I figured that was the way to go. I would like to read a manual that explains leveling up and skills and all of that stuff as it is not Dungeons and Dragons friendly (which is what I'm used to).

The worst thing about the controls that I've found is that even when I remap a keyboard control, it doesn't always work. I changed R to my mouse button to drop stuff... but it doesn't work. I had to change it back to R to be able to drop anything. I'd like to change the TAB button to something else, but I'd hate to lose that functionality. This seems like something Bethesda should be able to fix... once remapped, the key controls should change in every menu. How hard is that to make work?

I use a Logitech gamepad that lets meet move with a thumbstick and keep my fingers free for non-movement commands. Works great for me.

I too am a mouse/keyboard PC user and use WASD for all movement except moving forward.

I use right mouse button for move forward and left mouse button for attack.

Has anyone used this scheme with middle button (scroll wheel) for the left hand attack?

And if so, how was it?

I REALLY don't want to have to buy a USB Xbox controller for one game.

I tried the middle button for left attack, but I didn't like it. I wanted to set my mouse up like this, but I do so many two handed attacks that I found it more practical to move with my left hand, although a bit annoying. Right now I use my middle mouse button to select things... that is/was my other problem. When I see something, I want to grab it with my hands which leads to attacking people instead. It would be more intuitive for me to grab stuff with my hands instead of using an enter button.

Why would you use WASD for movement if you use the mouse? I can't imagine not using the mouse to turn around... that's what I hate about console games... looking around with the mouse is intuitive, quick and easy.

Sorry, wasn't clear in my first post. A and D for strafe, S for reverse and W for jump.

I look with the mouse and move forward with right-mouse.
