Best house for a mage character?

Post » Sat May 26, 2012 10:00 pm

So my character is mid-level now (level 30) and has about 50,000 gold, and he's a pure mage. Any opinions on what house might be best for a magey character? I tried out Breezehome but was not impressed even after the upgrades and reloaded before I bought the house.

I really really like Markarth city, definitely the most atmospheric for me, but don't know if the house (Vlindrel Hall?) is any good. Also like Hjerim in Windhelm, but am stuck on the Blood on the Ice quest (I think it's bugged...). Just arrived in Riften for the first time. Don't really like the city itself, but the house seems pretty cool with the porch and whatnot.

I like Solitude (definitely the most "cosmopolitan" city in Skyrim) but I heard bad things about the house...

What do you guys think? Do all the houses besides Breezehome also have Enchanting tables too?

I felt Vindrel Hall would be best suited for someone roleplaying a mage. I personally see Hjerim more for warriors because it is in Windhelm and Ulfric is the jarl there. Breezehome is more like my hunting lodge. Honeyside was going to be my assassin/theif hq due to its location. I see Solitude as the town that would have the most political conflicts because of its wealth and seaport, so the manor is my safe haven when I have to go there.

Thats how I RP with my houses :) . Vindrel Hall seems like the best for a mage though since Markarth kind of seems the most secluded from Skyrim and its architecture is the most unique.

Thanks! I settled on Vlindrel Hall in Markarth. I like it a lot! Love the Dwemer architecture and the enchanting and alchemy labs, and the huge organizeable bookshelves. And I love the view of the city from my doorstep. :)

And I think The Reach is my favorite hold anyway. Very atmospheric with the rivers and gorges and things. And it's right next to High Rock, my character's homeland.

And after doing all the quests in Markarth, I've got to say it's the most interesting city.

My favorite is the end of a quest so I'll just post it all as spoiler

Spoiler

Arch-Mage quarters are awesome for me.
I have a big double bed  a chest bulging with heavy dungeon loot, a safe, the alch & enchant tables, all these great hard to find ingredients PLUS an indoor garden with even more great plants, shrooms, etc., food, extra potions, it's really convenient. I don't really care about the niceties of porches and things yet...I just go there to sleep and craft and switch things out.
And oh yea, sometimes there's another dragon waiting at the entrance to be killed, with nice shooting cover for me. Sweet.
And oh yea, it's all FREE.

I'm actually paranoid of going too high in another guild as I'd like to know for sure that my arch-mage quarters won't be forfeit! That wouldn't happen, would it?

I use markharth as a place of study since it's got that ancient atmosphere

I actually don't like the Archmage quarters, because they're too open, too public and don't have any good storage space for books...
