1.8 BetaSolstheim DLC discussion Thread - #24

Post » Thu Oct 25, 2012 7:56 pm

The next DLC will be called Dragonborn and it will be set on the island of http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Solstheim.
The main locations you will be able to visit are http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Bloodmoon:Raven_Rock, Miraak Temple, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Bloodmoon:Castle_Karstaag and a Telvanni tower (N.B.: Not the Telvanni Tower seen in Morrowind in Vivec, but http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Tel_Uvirith).
There will be some new armor types, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Bonemold, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Chitin, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Nordic and http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Bloodmoon:Raw_Stalhrim each having heavy and light classifications.
Out of these new materials, you will be able to craft new types items out of two of them, namely Stalhrim and Nordic.
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Spears will be added along with an array of new creatures/automotons, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Riekling#Riekling, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Scrib#Scrib, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Morrowind:Netch#Netch, http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Boar#Boar, Benthic Lurker, Ballista Centurion, and something with an internal name of HMDaedra, quite possibly referring to http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Hermaeus_Mora since it lists his plane of oblivion, Apocrypha. You will also be able to ride dragons and be in combat while mounted on one.

http://i.imgur.com/gF1hJ.png is what the quest header for Dragonborn Quests will look like, and http://i.imgur.com/AJu91.png is what the compass markers look like for the new locations.
From the top, clockwise: Telvanni Tower, To Solstheim, Raven Rock, Castle Karstaag, Standing Stones, To Skyrim, Miraak Temple.

There will be at least two new tracked stats: Dragonborn Quests Completed, and Stalhrim Items Crafted

You will travel to Solstheim via a boat, much like you did in Bloodmoon, although this time, it looks like you may at least get a partial visual boat ride.
The Telvanni tower has float up and down animations, so no levitation it seems.
Dragon riding will take place in its own world space

Mounted combat looks like it's getting an improvement with the ability to cast spells while mounted, tihs isn't necessarily a Dragonborn only thing though!

It appears that Update 1.8 readies Skyrim for PS3 DLC.

Misinformation:
Weapon degrading -- There's nothing to indicate this is added, that isn't to say it can't/won't be added however. There was just no "new" information in this update. The degradation stuff seen previously has all been renemants from previous CK games (Fallout)
H2H stuff, That was my diff program messing up, sorry :)
Release dates -- No one but Bethesda knows!

Other stuff that I can't put my finger on or give intelligent guesses about because of lack of information
Miraak death animation, Chieftain animations, Chisel animations (perhaps new crafting station for the new armor.. doubt it though), Storn Death Reaction animation & Storn Suit Stages, Frea, Pray, StonePickUp, KillMoveDLC02RipHeartOut, TreeAmbush
There also seem to be a lot more animation files for running with weapons. No idea why.
Dwarven Ballista -- Possibly a new trap? http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Dwemer_Ballista#Dwemer_Ballista

All of the above is speculation over new strings found in the files from the 1.8 update, and should not be treated as facts or as any proof that any of it will even make it into the game! (but you all already knew that, didn't you!... Didn't you?) They were found by comparing 1.7.7.0 files with those in 1.8.145.0. The update to the Beta (i.e. 1.8.151.0) gave no new information.

You want proof, look at http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1417392-18-beta-update-solsthiem-dlc-hints-thread-9/page__view__findpost__p__21660925 http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1417392-18-beta-update-solsthiem-dlc-hints-thread-9/page__view__findpost__p__21660876 http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1417175-18-beta-update-solsthiem-dlc-hints/page__view__findpost__p__21656816 http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1417057-time-for-some-spoilers-form-the-latest-beta/page__view__findpost__p__21653361

@ Mardoxx

Could you elaborate on your monosyllabic answer? Does no mean, November is way too early, or does that mean, I refuse to speculate on a release date?

When I am eagerly anticipating something, I love to engage in baseless speculation, so please feel free to throw out any particular guess. Points to those who give some kind of reasoning, and a knife in the back for those who play with my emotions! :hehe:

If you want random speculation just read ANYTHING in the past threads. :D
We speculated our asses off, dude. ;)

I personally would say:
11/11/12 - announcement
12/12/12 - release

Speculating on a release date until an official statement comes out, or until the DLC has been pushed to Steam, is a bad idea IMO. That said, there's no actual concrete proof that Dragonborn will come to fruition!

Which reminds me, There's some DLC for Borderlands 2 that's just hit the Steam network. Currently unannounced though.

Oh, the world won't end. Cthulhu takes over. You weren't informed?
I, for one, welcome our new transdimensional overlord.

Thus Hermaeus Mora in the DLC.

Hmm... speculating on theme/MQ... What if it is tied in to the whole Mayan thing... not the end of the world, but the turning of the age... Stopping to think, this was already alluded to in the vanilla Alduin MQ. The world eater came to end this world and bring in the new one. What if, now that Alduin is gone, the Dovakhin must take up that mantle, usher in the new age... the results could be epic.

Not that exciting, but will give me a reason to screw around with the game again I guess. The only thing that'd really excite me is serious combat revamping/balancing.

These kind of changes would go far further in improving the game than new armor sets/quests/npcs/areas(not that I don't welcome and appreciate those) -

-Spell cost:damage ratio adjustments for destruction.
-Ward buffs to make them 1. not stagger you, 2. reduce ALL damage not just magic, 3. more cost effective (make them a viable off-hand to a shield instead of an utter waste of time)
-Armor spell buffs - much longer duration, higher armor value, and/or additional utility
-Revamp illusion's control spells to be effective on enemies of all levels rather than a guessing game of whether it will affect a target, but prevent complete shutdown capability
-Buff in-combat regen, nerf the hell out of/remove mana cost reduction enchant effect
-2h weapon buff to make it competitive with dual wielding
-New spells with more interesting effects(like shouts)
-Potion animation to prevent ridiculous spam
-Crafting balancing
-Locational damage
-Directional attacks
-General movement and animation improvements, slower strafing/backpeddling to make combat less awkward and all over the place with NPCs sliding around the landscape like it's coated in grease.

Hmm... speculating on theme/MQ...
Hermaeus Mora does have a lot to do with the whole "new knowledge" game.

...the scrying of the tides of Fate, of the past and future as read in the stars and heavens, and in whose dominion are the treasures of knowledge and memory.

Not that exciting, but will give me a reason to screw around with the game again I guess. The only thing that'd really excite me is serious combat revamping/balancing.

Well, if the dlc even has half the stuff that you're speculating it has, then it's going to be great and sure will add a lot to the game.

That is, if this is even a real DLC ;)

Exactly, something that's never happened before, the "end of the world" has been averted. Alduin is dead (maybe, at least until the end of the next age). What happens? Seems like a pretty drastic change to have NO effect. What if putting the brakes on the coming of the new age is sort of like a metaphysical slam on the brakes and the world starts fishtailing... careening on the edge of a precipice. The Dovakhin needs to set the course straight again. Who better than to seek help from than the lord of knowledge? Who else would know a thing no one knows?

Of course, he's probably not going to give it to us willingly. Maybe we have to sneak it from under his... er... olfactory gland?

He might, if he has a vested interest in it. Of course, the other denizens of Apocrypha might not be as amiable. Even so, I can't see a direct battle with HM himself as he doesn't really seem to be interested in that sort of thing as much as gaining knowledge. To that end... might we have to give up a scroll (or three)?

 Hopefully they don't play that card again! I'm interested in what this "careening" scenario is like. Is it filled with disturbed creatures, or are there strange magical wounds causing odd problems?

I doubt we would fight HM too. Although...

I can picture trying to sneak up on him wearing the Ebony Mail from Boetheia, the shrouded black miasma covering you up...

Yes, part of me still wishes HM was voiced by Billy West.

You can 1 hit k/o everything with a one handed weapon depending on how much you've buffed yourself with their crafting system, so anecdotes tell us nothing without detailed information on weapon damage, perks, mods, difficulty setting etc. By level 50 almost everyone is near invincible unless they're limiting themselves and/or using difficulty increasing mods. By then you're killing things so fast that weapon balance becomes a non-factor.

With default weapons and armor though, 2 weapons are vastly superior damage to a 2 hander which has the added vulnerability of (unrealistically)clunky/slow swings and power attacks.

More like an earthquake swallows Rorikstead, leaving a lake behind, and the town reappears to the north, and none of the inhabitants seem to notice any difference. The sun goes dark for a week, then shines nonstop for a week, mammoths and giants start rampaging for no reason, the Greybeards disappear, no one knows to where, the outcome of the civil war is, all of a sudden, reversed, Falmer start regaining their sight, that kind of careening. Starts minor, only the Psijics really notice at first, ask the Dovkhin for help. Ending can also retro in a resolution to The Eye.
