Bethesda and the post-apocalyptic genre.

Post » Mon Aug 27, 2012 2:20 pm

So i've been noticing this, Bethesda seems to be the super-power in gaming when it comes to the post-apocalyptic genre of games. I mean they Have the Fallout series and RAGE, and a rumor that they acquired the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series(is it confirmed true/false or still a rumor). And some have suggested that they acquire the Metro series from THQ if they go under. anybody else notice this and how do you feel about it?

Resident Evil is pretty popular, don't know who makes that though.

Valve also has nice post-apoc stuff.

Gears of War is also pretty popular.

And what about Resistance?

Post Nuclear apocalypse, but is Resident evil even a zombie apocalypse anymore? its more like a bio terrorist thing now. And the other 3 are alien invasions/occupation.

RE is Capcom.

As for Stalker, usually when Beth acquires something we see it open up as a section here in the forums, and I havent seen it... I'm not sure if it's been acquired or not.

Post apocalyptic genre? They are average. But in the RPG genre, they are very good. Fallout is some of both, it is post-apocalyptic, but an average post apocalyptic game. As an RPG game, it excels. Get where I'm going here?

I have and I'm definitely good with it. What the have done withis amazing either as a dev or publisher. Hopefully last light gets to come out before thq goes under and I really hope they don't, but I'm sure if bethesda got their hands on it it would be an impressive game.

Well that is just a tiny blip in the the post-apocalypse genre.

And Resident Evil started as a zombie apocalypse, usually you don't come back from those things. :D

Resident Evil is one of my favorite series' ever. 2 and 3 owns. Saddens me what Capcom is doing to it now, though..

The only thing I know about it is that it has aliens invading, so I didn't know if it was good or popular.

Truth be told, I didn't care much for RAGE, it wasn't very attention grabbing. I got to that Wellsprings town, got bored, uninstalled it.

Well, it is an old-fashioned, brainless FPS (with driving) in disguise :hehe:

It wasn't a BAD game, it just lacked. Maybe after playing Fallout for so long, any other game in a Post-Apoc situation comes up short for me.

The Post-Apoc Bethesda title I enjoyed the most was Skynet. On foot, in a jeep or in an HK. Good location variety, weapons and enemies. Strong atmosphere and a good challenge.

Fallout 3 was dismal for me. It just felt utterly devoid of the charm of Fallout 1+2. The writing was awful and it ended up feeling like Oblivion with guns.

I'd shudder to see what current era Bethesda would do to Stalker.

Bethesda would not do nice things to STALKER. Also Metro 2033 is a linear FPS, something I would rather Bethesda not try.

Well Bethesda doesn't have to develop it. 4A Games could still be develop the Metro series and BEthesda could find someone to do STALKER.

Then you would [censored] your pants if EA or activision got them instead.
But to be honest, Bethesda wouldn't be the worst company out there.

well rage was a big disappointment to alot of people out there fallout3 was fun to play if you dont put any thought in about the world and how it fits together and the one sided story, i feel S.T.A.L.K.E.R games most notably shadow of chernobyl is way more atmospheric and immersive than both new vegas and fallout3 and now 1Cent company and best way studios are taking a shot at a game with some stalker vibe to it called nuclear union set in the U.S.S.R here is a link to its web site if they pull it out right it might be great

I tend to agree with this. I'm skeptical about Dishonored as well... There's too much hype, as there was for Brink... and Rage.

I loved Rage but id is seriously distant to their customers... Brink was terrible. The worst game I've ever bought. It's actually a joke with my friends. We rate games and say that nothing is as terrible as Brink, and if the game is terrible we'd rather play Brink (but of course we never do). :P

well Rage was Id's (Beth published) so it being more FPS than RPG would make sense, but there is a special place in my heart for Id's games just as there is for beth's.

Yea they've publisehd some bad games in recent years but they've had plenty of good ones. Heres the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bethesda_Softworks, and they have some promising games on the way.
