Bethesda really loves Tolken

Post » Mon Jun 04, 2012 1:14 pm

God please stop. Tolken is great and all but it has been done to death. I would much rather see a great RPG or MMO done on the Song of Ice and Fire.

That is being done in a Skyrim Total Conversion as well:

First of all, what halflings are there in TES? and second, if you want to cry rip off, which i personally don't think you have the right to do, then Tolkien ripped of several cultural mythologies.

This argument is kinda silly, everyone is inspired by things outside their own mind, there's no such thing as truly original thought.

on another note, I like how drastically different TES elves are from the norm. They're more likely to be evil in Tamriel than good, and I find it refreshing.

I was talking to Boo, so I had Baldus Gate in mind, not TES. Sorry.

I'm not gonna cry anything. I just have a slightly academical approach to Fantasy, and I hate obvious references in movies that claim to present something original. Most people I associate with feel the same, but no one care about it in games for some reason.

Btw: All elves from the Fantasy Litterature are lame compared to elves in RL folklore.

Unfortunately half the chords were wrong in half their renditions. But, that was pretty cool.

Giants stand on the shoulders of giants, and inspiration is a river running from the past to the future. But it is interesting how relaxed gamers are about the obvious use of classics, like LoTR. If Skyrim was a movie, the audience would cry "RIPOFF!!".

I think you have said it better than I.

And yeah I have read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi.

A lot of western fantasy is based on Tolkein's fantasy world. I think thats where we got elves and orcs and such.

However, go look at reviews of fantasy literature, where people are always blasting authors for regurgitating tolkein, jordan or in sci-fi re-cycling threads from asmiov or herbert.

In the gaming industry its much more accepted (and in some cases greatly appreciated) practice to use the works of others -> http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:The_Night_Mother%27s_Child#The_Night_Mother.27s_Child

Having said that, let me reiterate, I still like TES and I don't mind the allusions to popular fantasy.

OP- Sorry, I really didn't mean to ruffle so many feathers and then end up hijacking the thread...

/me declares we go back to the topic

I found 'Mount Althor' during a quest (do we want spoilers here too?)

I agree with you, OP, and it's got to be difficult to make a game like Skyrim and have it be completely different from anything Tolkien did. He so set the standard for our modern fantasy tales. I love the nods to LOTR and I'm sure there are many I don't recognize. Anyone who hasn't yet read Tolkien should give it a go this winter. Great story.

And my point is that by this logic, Tolkien is also not original because he drew from popular sources that existed outside his own head... which is not a bad thing, nobody's ripping anybody because the real intellectual property belongs to people who are dead, buried and forgotten for millenia at least. I look at TES as part of the cycle of refreshing the mythology with updated cultural ideas, which is probably reading into it way too much, lol.

I wouldn't love TES if it wasn't for the references. Games and their ways to tell stories follow other rules than traditional litterature, and reuse from classics is here a valid tool, imo.

Some literate people would call it "Post Modernism", I guess, and just hate it for that.

As I already said: Giants stand on the shoulders of giants... I'm not discussing if this is good or bad in TES. Just making some thoughts about it. For example that I have other standards when it comes to movies and books.

If you do the same thing in a book or a movie, then its plagiarizing. If you use the same chord progression in music its plagiarizing.

What the heck? No it isn't... otherwise every damn song composed or book written nowadays would just be plagiarism.

no thanks. george martin is a competent writer but his fantasy is derivative to the extreme.

Actually, what are you talking about? The way Edoras looks in the movie has nothing to do with the way Tolkien originally imagined it, he was long dead when the film was made. So, Bethesda does not love Tolkien, but maybe Peter Jackson (though you can't even say that).

Skyrim actually gives me more of a Game of thrones Or Beowulf vibe then Lotr Vibe.

Meh, I didn't get any of the references. Probably because I have no interest in those books whatsoever. Wish there was a few more ASoIaF references though.
