Giants stand on the shoulders of giants, and inspiration is a river running from the past to the future. But it is interesting how relaxed gamers are about the obvious use of classics, like LoTR. If Skyrim was a movie, the audience would cry "RIPOFF!!".
I think you have said it better than I.
And yeah I have read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi.
A lot of western fantasy is based on Tolkein's fantasy world. I think thats where we got elves and orcs and such.
However, go look at reviews of fantasy literature, where people are always blasting authors for regurgitating tolkein, jordan or in sci-fi re-cycling threads from asmiov or herbert.
In the gaming industry its much more accepted (and in some cases greatly appreciated) practice to use the works of others -> http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:The_Night_Mother%27s_Child#The_Night_Mother.27s_Child
Having said that, let me reiterate, I still like TES and I don't mind the allusions to popular fantasy.
OP- Sorry, I really didn't mean to ruffle so many feathers and then end up hijacking the thread...
/me declares we go back to the topic
I found 'Mount Althor' during a quest (do we want spoilers here too?)
