Why not? It's a science that some people can be pretty brilliant at. It's possible to conduct marketing in a smart, ethical way that informs people about a product they might want without insulting them or invading their privacy. The only problem is that there's too much marketing that doesn't follow those simple rules.

Try working for a company that doesn't know how to properly market its services. Just make sure you update your resume frequently - you will be needing it, and soon.

Assumes I work in the private sector...

Softnerd put it far better: "It's possible to conduct marketing in a smart, ethical way that informs people about a product they might want without insulting them or invading their privacy. The only problem is that there's too much marketing that doesn't follow those simple rules."

When you're inundated with that type of negative marketing on a daily basis are you honestly surprised I take a dim view of it overall? Advertising can be done in a good way. It usually isn't though.

The other side of Marketing is to determine just what it is that the customer or potential customers want. Something Microsoft is learning the hard way.

Advertising is a subset of marketing, and the part that most annoys people like you and me. Or anyone else for that matter that is not producing Media.

I don't deny that there's an awful lot of sleazy, unethical marketing practices in use today. But to broad brush all of it as sleazy, unethical and completely unworthy of respect is wrong.

And lots of people do work in the private sector.
