But let me guess, you're totally convinced that Steam won't ever die and that you won't ever be without an internet connection, right? And then to hell with the fact that Steam-products are actually just data-packages that you have virtual ownership over, which means all it takes to wipe out your game collection is a sufficiently serious server crash, and if you reinstall the day Anon goes super-viral with a DDoS against Valve, you're not going to be playing any games that day.
I'm totally convinced that while we can sit around all day coming up with doomsday predictions worst case scenarios rarely eventuate and even when they do they there is usually a work around and fixes to salvage/mitigate the situation (and working with computers long enough has shown this to be true in my experience). It has worked fine for me. It looks like it will continue to work fine. And don't worry about my data. It managed to survive a suitably damaging Brisbane flood, I seem to be doing ok. As the scouts say - Be prepared. Or was that Scar from the Lion King?.
But sure, all that might well happen. Don't know the actual probability but it is far from impossible (although running some figures around my head seems to suggest based on experience etc I have a greater danger of dying in a car accident then this happening, but whatever, I'll still drive and use steam where I have to). If it does happen I suspect while I might experience emotions ranging from anger to sadness I will have the strength to carry on and rebuild. Maybe even learn to love again.
And ok, Anon going super-viral made me laugh. If they manage it in my lifetime it might almost be worth the loss of some games to see. That and I am often without an internet connection. Until my transhumanist fantasies eventuate and I can get wireless installed in my head I accept there will be times I won't be able to play a game that requires it (though with each passing month it seems these times and locations become fewer and fewer).
Of course if you are talking about a scenario where I can't afford internet access or something (or Terrorists BLOW UP THE INTERNET! or civilisation as we know it collapses for some reason) I think I would have bigger concerns then Steam and Skyrim.
It wasn't a secret that Skyrim would use Steam. So if you don't like it you had one of three choices: Deal with it, don't buy it or get a console to play it on.
No... it isn't possible... is it? I thought it was just a legend! I never actually believed you existed, but here it is: common sense. And it is beautiful.
