In vanilla Skyrim, the horse when moving forward always follows the path of the camera (mouse). At first I though it was great because you can just hold down forward (W) and swing the cam (Mouse) around to control the horse. The problem is you look around while exploring on horseback independently from the horse. The damn animal just keeps trying to stay centered on the cam.
Scenario: You're galloping down a mountain trail and think you see something amazing to the left out of the corner of your eye. You try to simply look left using the mouse while continuing on your path but alas the horse is magically drawn to turn with the cam. The only way to counter this is to try to use the left (A) and right (D) keys to counteract the horse direction. Pretty soon you're pissed because you didn't get to see what you were looking for, your horse fell of a cliff after fighting the controls. Worst design ever.
MOD REQUEST
I'm requesting a mod that liberates the horse from the camera altogether. I would like to see a better control scheme, where the horse control is keyboard only (WASD), and the camera (mouse) is independent. If I'm trotting in a straight line using W and want to look left or right, I should be able to just move the mouse and have the cam swing around while the horse stays on its original path. This is a common control design in games where you can ride animals, drive vehicles, etc. It would work a lot better in Skyrim.
Horses are unusable IMO unless you are trying to make a straight run from point A to B without looking at anything around you on the way. They're bad enough where you have to get off of them to do anything (fight back against an attack, talk to NPCs, etc.)
Who's with me? I can't be the only one who can't stand the horse controls?
