BioWare is going downhill fast

Post » Thu Aug 16, 2012 9:34 am

A once great company has completely derailed and is not only making horrifically poor products, but horrifically dumbed down products. Anyone see the article on their monetising of players? I hope economic demand spurns them and crushes them into absolute oblivion. They are complete puppets of EA now. Why anybody tolerates entering into a legal purchasing contract with content missing and attempted to be resold to you is beyond me. Of course, BioWare thinks you are all entitled as well. Entitled whiners...but your money needs to be theirs. Its rightfully theirs, not yours.

I enjoyed Mass Effect 3. I enjoy their games they've been making.

Oh wait I also don't care what happens to them though because my life doesn't resolve around hating or loving their products, what happens happens. so be it.

I think we get at least one "Bioware svcks now" thread a week.

I still enjoy the games they make but yes they have made some poor choices buisness wise.

What company hasn't though!? Valve- Lets not make a 3rd number game, ever.
Bethesda- Lets not make a game with a small amount of bugs, and when we find some, not fix them, ever.
Activision- Lets not stop milking a game that should be gone, ever.
343/Bungie- Look back to "Activision"

It goes on..

Didn't we have one of these a few days ago?

From the rules:
8. The only criticism that is allowed here is constructive criticism and that is welcome.

Constructive criticism criticizes a proposed idea. Criticism that is directed against one person, be it a modder, another member, an individual developer, a certain moderator or a group effort are all forbidden.
This means that when you voice your concerns, please do so in a way that offers a vehicle for improvement. If you see something going wrong, feel free to say so, but also say something about how to set it right.

It also means that posts that run down other members or factions among the membership who may not agree with you are still out under the rules against flaming and flamebaiting.

Emphasis here on "group effort" (and maybe "developer", but it's a little ambiguous whether it means a single development studio or one member of the development team, probably the latter.)

So if you don't want your thread to end up locked, I'd expand your complaints to include specific examples. What specifically don't you like about their games, and what could they do to improve them? "Poor" and "Dumbed down" are just flamebait, they don't actually mean anything.

That said, I don't see anything particularly wrong about their approach. Overall, they're still making critically acclaimed games. The only big complaints I see are about Dragon Age II and the ending of Mass Effect 3, which they tried to fix for free. The first Mass Effect was a good game, if a little boring the second time around. I haven't played the others yet but mean to. I own Dragon Age: Origins but have yet to play it. I don't have any right to complain, but I don't see what I would complain about. Is it just the cool thing to do these days?

Bleach is healthy; it's mostly water, and we're mostly water. Therefore, we're bleach.

Also, if you don't like what BW is doing, don't buy from them. It's what I'm doing.

I'll be shocked if Dragon Age 3 is somewhat decent considering the current Bioware/EA mentality.I'll be waiting until some user reviews are out on it before I even consider going near it,I learnt my lesson after the Dragon Age 2 fiasco.

It doesn't help EA is now rebranding other studious with the Bioware name. Studios with games that will sink their name. The end is just in sight now.

I still enjoy the content put out by them. Day one DLC is low, but a good marketing move nonetheless. If Mass Effect 3 is a sign of anything, it's that you shouldn't get rid of writers that were a part of the previous entries in the series. The ending to Mass Effect 3 contradicted so many things that were featured in Mass Effect 1 and 2. EA doesn't care about the fans. That's prolly true, but they do love their money. We all know that old EA saying. Not necessarily Biowares fault.

Yeah, the ending was disappointing, but otherwise ME3 was great. (and that stupid "fix the ending" DLC should never have happened)
Played DA2 finally, last month. Yeah, they could have come up with a better version of "re-use dungeon tilesets", but it was otherwise reasonably interesting. The narrative structure was a nice change from the usual.

So...... dunno, not sure what the big problem is. Besides it being "hip" to spend your time on forums beating on popular targets. (CoD and "casuals" being the other biggies. Oh, and "dumbing down".)

Each to their own I guess with Dragon Age 2,I thought the game was lacking in every aspect compared to Origins. The narrative made little sense as a Mage.

@ Kiralyn.

If by nice change from the usual you mean a complete and incoherent mess, I suppose you have a point.

I don't think they're any worse now than they've ever been. On the quality of their products... I don't know why people are making such a big deal about them releasing a subpar game or two. They released a few bad games when they were a brand new company, and they've released several pretty subpar games in the years since they parted ways with Black Isle after Baldur's Gate II. Namely Neverwinter Nights, Jade Empire and Sonic Chronicles. Really, The Old Republic and Mass Effect 3 aren't even bad games, and I definitely prefer them over the likes of the three aforementioned titles which were all made when they were considered "great". The only recent BioWare game that I found particularly bad was Dragon Age II, which was a mess of poor design and storytelling.

As for their monetizing, it's not much of an issue (I'm assuming you're referring to their recent discussion about day one DLC). Was Sebastian essential to Dragon Age II? No, was Javik essential to Mass Effect 3? No, neither character really contributed much to their respective game, and both felt lacking in comparison to the core companions. Now if they were cutting out a chunk of the main story, forcing you to buy the second half of the game as day one DLC for an additional $20-$30, then I might take issue - they aren't doing that yet though, so let's not give them any ideas.

I have never played Mass Effect 3 because it is tied to Origin and I do not want that software on my computer, I am perfectly happy with Steam and the hundreds of games it offers. I played through Dragon Age 2 but the entire time I thought the game could be so much better. After that, I never really paid attention to anything Bioware made, including Star Wars: The Old Republic. Although, that one is going free to play later this year so I might check it out.

It's what I'm doing, too, except I want to get the message out to any and all. I feel it is a lightning rod of the game industry in general. It's very hard to find developers that meet my economic demand for games that have solid RPG mechanics, respects player intelligence and doesn't offer boring and easy gameplay using standard and overused, simplistic combat. I also think if consumer demand doesnt speak loud and clear, all games will continue to evolve towards simplistic, watered-down and DRM.

How have Command and Conquer fans reacted to the fact Generals 2 has no singleplayer and is pay to win?
