Bizarre fix

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 12:13 pm

I can play Rage now without losing textures, without crashing when I enter new areas, and perhaps the thing I am most relieved about, I can save via F5 and access the menu via "ESC" without the game locking up.

I do have crappy frame rates and I also epxerience 1 FPS slideshows that last 3-5 seconds now and again, but they only seem to occur as textures load for the first time in large areas. But the game is just about playable and it is pleasing on the eye.

I uninstalled the 11.10 v2 preview drivers because they were causing me problems with other games and reinstalled the 11.9 CCC and drivers. I made a shortcut to Rage.exe and set the compatibility mode to Win 95/ME and added the line +vt_maxPPF 16 +jobs_numThreads 0 to the shortcut in the "Target" field. I really didn't expect anything from this and was just messing around killing a bit of time. To my utter amazement the game loaded, looked just fine, ran a bit crappy, but allowed me to save and access the menu as many times as I liked during a 25 minute playing session. I fully expect to get home from work tomorrow and find out that it has inexplicably stopped working. In the meantime I'm going to enjoy Rage :hubbahubba:

My system is Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.0GHZ
HD4850 1GB
4GB RAM
Win 7 32 bit.

I have no config files. Texture size is set to small and AF to low. AA is set to 4 and all settings in CCC are set to application.

I'll probably wake up soon and find out it was just a dream

the only hurdle left then is how incredibly short the game is ;)

I've already got about 40 hours playing Rage clocked up in Steam. That's pretty impressive.

39 hours of that was spent watching the intro movie over and over and over again. Some developers will do anything to pad out a game to make it seem a decent length.

I got in 50 hours before beating the game on "Nightmare" (before even opening up multiplayer, which I'm now enjoying!). I can definitely see how you could run through it faster than that, but I had more fun taking it slow and trying to do everything that I could. And I still haven't reached "100% completion" like I'd like to. And, granted, maybe you're better than I am, or maybe you don't like taking your time, but that 50 hours is a lot longer than the 7 hours it took me to beat Modern Warfare 2 on "Veteran" (most recent FPS I bought/played).

And back to the original subject ...

I don't know exactly what your issues are, but I would try to find a thread with what seems to be the same issue or make a new one, and then, the two most important parts:
  • post a detailed description of the problem (like you've done in this thread)
