The opening cinematic runs perfectly fine, but when I get to character creation everything is black except for the menu. I am able to click on things and select attributes, and even enter the game, but the screen is still black except for the HUD.

I am using a Radeon HD 6870 graphics card, Intel i5-2500k processor, and 8 GB of RAM. Has anybody else experienced this issue?

That sounds like the nVidia black screen bug, which is clearly...odd. Have you tried updating your card's drivers? Is this a system upgrade? Was the game already installed? For that fix, you can try installing the Unofficial Oblivion Patch and the Supplementals updates. However, if this is happening at the beginning of the game, as in, in the starter dungeon, that's probably not the issue...?

Check your card's temps in GPU-z or the ATI control panel or something.

Turns out the drivers were out of date. This is a new computer, and I updated the drivers through Steam, assuming that would be sufficient.

Updating from the drivers on the website fixed the problem. Thanks for the help!
