Black screen at 1 frame per second, sound plays in backgroun

Post » Tue May 15, 2012 9:59 am

Hi, I've got:

Intel Q6600 (4 cores @ 2.4)
4.5GB memory
Radeon HD5830 card (1024MB RAM)
Rage w/ Update 1
Windows 7 64-bit

Whenever I start a new game, I get through the opening cutscene, then the screen goes black, and my FPS counter (using FRAPS) goes to 0. I can still hear audio; there is a beeping background 'warning' type alert that seems to be looping, however each loop only starts on a new frame. If I leave it long enough I can eventually see a series of random white characters on the screen scroll slowly (changing 1 character per frame) to "Eden Project" (seems to be some opening chapter text/location?). Every once in a while when I run it I will see a single frame of looking out of a stasis pod with very low res textures. I've tried vanilla installs along with the modification suggested in http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1239628-ati-hd-xxxx-and-dualcore-cpu-problem-solved/. Nothing changes what I see. I've tried with the most recent generic Catalyst drivers, with the http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU121AMDCatRagePerfDriver.aspx, and with the http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Pages/GPU122AMDCat1110PreDriverV2.aspx suggested by the above forum topic. No changes observed with any different drivers.

Any tips on what I can try next? Surely my system isn't so bad that it can't run this game at a single frame every couple of seconds ;)

Thanks,
Mark

Have you tried doing the atioglxx.dll fix?

Here's the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1239052-ultimate-fix/ and here's the http://dl.dropbox.com/u/11762729/atioglxx.dll.

I already had +vt_maxPPF 8 in my launch options, as it was in the advice the other post I linked to gave, I also had +cvaradd jobs_numThreads -1 per that post, but I changed them to the values you gave and removed atioglxx.dll, it reverted to the original problem. So far atioglxx.dll has been the only fix that has worked (at the apparent expense of framerate, according to kaz05051)

Finally, after almost a week of trying I was finally able to get past the asteroid video with the atioglxx.dll fix. Now if I could just do somthing about the framerate and the wierd, cloudy textures I have on the edge of the screen.

Thanks for the fix so far, any suggestions on what to do next?

Yeah I have 5830 too and having exact same problem since day one. No command line or config settings helped me cure this problem no matter what. The only way I can play this game is to use atioglxx.dll from older drivers(11.6 or 11.8)but framerate simply isn't stable enough to enjoy the game and I see stange glare in a lot of places especially at wellspring. Maybe 5830 is worst affected card by this bug in the whole ati range of cards? I don't know...

Why the administration does not make any comments at the expense of our problems?
Do we not deserve support, for the money spent on the game?
Would say, when will the patch or what to do!

I just tried this game on another rig I have and it ran butter smooth everything maxed out with latest driver.
I think the culprit is 5830 driver which meeds to be sorted out asap.

Judging by this thread there's a problem with 5830's in general not liking the drivers and/or the game :(

You could try reverting back to 11.6 drivers as a last resort, checkout this guide, if you haven't tried already:

I too have a Radeon HD 5830 and I haven't had too much luck. I have tried many things and the only things that worked were installing 11.6 catalyst drivers, this gave frame rates around 15-25 fps which svcked but it was better than being completely unplayable. I have also reinstalled the 11.10 drivers and then got it working with turning off Catalyst AI, but the textures are messed up and it froze after a short while.

The part that really digs me is that if I put in my GeForce 9800GT it works and actually looks pretty good for an old graphics card, but that card didn't do well with the BF3 Beta. So I am really thinking about getting a new card now and ATI is NOT on my list. I am thinking about either a 560 Ti or 570.

Same card here Radeon 5830 none of the fixes work for me either. Some moron is even saying it's not a gaming card, ATI website says it's a gaming card and every other game I run works great
