How would that even work? I'm assuming by blackout he means complete blackout. That would mean the cell network is down as well as power.

Crank It rechargeable radio with built in flashlight one just has to wind up to keep charged.

First Aid Kit and Survival Kit bag which government supplies if you qualify or you can get your own.

Rechargeable items like ipods and laptops fully charged if there is enough warning ahead of time or just keep them decently charged at all times.

Emergency food supplies to last a month or more.

Water in gallon milk bottles for flushing the toilet and washing up.

A good book to read or other downtime relaxation to pass the time as stress free as possible.

There are things like emergency channels that kick in which send out news over the airwaves reporting on what is going on that's why things like a Crank It radio are useful for being aware.

These days a complete blackout isn't exactly that. There is always something running whether its landline phones or ham radio :)

CCNA covered it. An alternative heat source is also important if you live where it's cold.

The other night, my power went out for just a few minutes. It is amazing how dark my house got. Normally, there are LEDs all over the place putting out light. These things are every where in the house, so even at night, it's not really dark. Couple that with the street lights being dark (that can give you some light through the window) people may not realize just how dark the house can get during a power outage. Well, when the power went out, it reminded me to distribute my flashlights in strategic areas. Now, I have one in my nightstand, one in my kitchen, one in my office, and one in my living room, all in furniture or drawers that I can find in pitch black dark.
