Blackreach: Thoughts?

Post » Sun Aug 05, 2012 7:34 pm

So, I love Blackreach, but there are only like 2 quests and a secret encounter. But it is such a HUGE area. What is there to do there other than:

Spoiler
The main quest for the Elder Scroll, the Crimson Nirnroot quest and the dragon
?

I seriously wonder if Bethesda has any plans for it for the future. There is no way they would spend so much time on an incredible area and just leave it so empty.

What are your thoughts? Or if I missed something in it, please feel free to share. I'd love to spend more time there.

I never go to Blackreach alone. It's far too scary for me to handle. It's nice to look at, I just fear going in there alone.

Only been there twice. The second time was just to get the Dragon to come out, but it never did, as I cannot remember if I fought him the first time I went there. Anyways, I don't find it all that very exciting. Dark, and pretty empty. Beautiful and interesting, none the less.

Go mine soul gems...
It still think its funny how big it is. It reaches to Whiterun hold (which in itself is also funny)

I think they did this on purpose...
Blackreach-Whiterun

Totally needs a quest more epic than what we got. Would have been nice to see Dwemer ghost haunting its halls. Going about daily lives unknowing of their own deaths and not hostile to anything. Would have been nice to encounter a non freakafied snow elf under ground. Maybe a small clan that isnt part of the Falmer freakdom. Hidden away tucked under the mountains.

It is a large mine for Geode veins, which contain empty soul gems (including black ones) and an unusually high incidence of gemstones. It also has several Corundum ore veins. It is a subterranean area linking several majour Dwarven ruins, and as such can be used for subterranean travel (in particular for criminals on the lam and stage 4 vampire characters) around the eastern half of the province.

I think a large part of its feel would be ruined if it wasn't empty, desolate, nothing but swaying glowing mushroom stalks and the occasional chaurus or cold metal animunculous or brutal Falmer with four or five times the normal distance between encounters between them. Honestly, what "made" the dungeon for me is that one lone giant wandering up and down the path, that like any other giant only becomes hostile if you ignore his warnings to sod off, but that otherwise just paces, looking lonely and forlorn... He embodies what it is to live in Blackreach, I feel, and you're left to wonder how he got there, whether he used to have a giant clan and herd mammoths like the others, if he became lost, if he was an exile, if he was somehow born or stranded in Blackreach. Whatever the cause, he just wanders back and forth until such a time as you kill him.

I actually wish we got more areas that big and that interesting at the end of dungeons, it feels like blackreach was a one of a kind dungeon and I wish there were more that were that creative and or big

Its already been explained 'where' the Dwemer went so them walking the halls would be hard to do unless its like the spectral thing from the Labyrinthian. They already have a pocket of 'non freakafied' snow elves...but they could always say that there was more than one group hiding only problem is that I don't see them being down in Blackreach.

Someone circled a generalized map of Blackreach comparative to to the above area...if it were any bigger it'd be able to go under the city of Whiterun or High Hrothgar...

All I know is that I spend way too long In that dark dank pit, looking for those quest items.

When was that? The closest I've seen is the highly varying story about Kagrenac, Dagoth Ur, Vivec and Nerevar with the Heart of Lorkhan, and a shoutout to it in a small difficult to follow quest in Skyrim. Even then, you could see spectral dwarves in Morrowind, and at the end of
Spoiler
Arniel's Endeavour you can summon his ghost.

Seems totally plausible to me, even assuming that's what REALLY happened to the dwarves.

I think it's too big with not enough going on in it.

Spoiler
Would be cool if we could try and free the slaves from the Falmer as a sidequest, and find rare Dwemer artifacts, etc.

By the way, would the Legion be able to up patrols near Riverwood? I'm starting to hear gruesome and outlandish sounds during the night. I even think I saw a Falmer arrow lying around somewhere.

I will look into this, just let me know where you sighted the arrow and I will take a small garrison to take care of it.

I've been a couple times and I'm still not so sure on how big it is. Its a beautiful, but scary place at the same time. It feels endless at times.

Falmer have been known to leave the caves at night and kill/steal from/harrass people. There's even a book on it. "Ghosts in the Storm" or something.

South. It couldn't possibly be Falmer, however. I don't know of any areas they live in nearby.
