Blocking Spells With Shields

Post » Thu May 17, 2012 4:40 pm

I've noticed that if you block with your shield after an enemies spell has connected with you, it doesn't avert damage. So for example, a dragon begins shooting fire at you, if you hold up your shield a second after the fire hits you, it doesn't defend from the rest of the spell. Wouldn't anyone else prefer it if you could pull up your shield in the middle of the spell to deflect the rest of the incoming damage?

I should also make it clear that I have the elemental protection perk.

Are talking about the perk, or just striaght up blocking?

Because you cannot straight up block magic

Not everyone is a mage.

Yes, the perk adds 50% magic resistance if the shield is held up, but only if you hold it up before the spell connects. The problem is that some enemies cast a destruction spell for as long as 10 seconds, so unless you pull the shield up in time the only thing you can do is watch your health go down to 0.

It's also what the Elemental Protection perk is for.

Just curious, do you have the blocking perk that reduces magic damage?

You can in pretty much every other fantasy universe.
It's called Spell Reflect.

This sounds like design flaw to me.

They probably checked to see if it hit you once, when it first connects, the rest of the damage is given the go ahead because the initial flag was true instead of doing multiple checks throughout the source of damage dealt.

Agree with your judgement on this, but I feel it would have made more sense for the game to query whether the player is blocking per 'tick' of damage, rather than only initially.

Yes this is what I meant to say. You have a better way of explaining it than I

I've got the same problem. Annoying bug to be sure! I'm also thinking it doesn't work with frost at all.

That would be reflecting, not blocking, now wouldn't it? ;)

I dunno if blocking fire with that mostly wooden iron shield of yours would be too great an idea though.
