Blocking with dual-wield! And its consequences.

Post » Wed Jun 12, 2013 5:29 am

So in the Gametrailers stream earlier today there was a moment when the player blocked while wielding two weapons. They crossed in front of the player and it looks like a block maneuver.

So either this means 1 of 2 things. It could be that blocking with dual-wielded weapons is another key than RMB or that there is no right-hand/left-hand control and the dual-wield attacks just kinda happen one after the other as you spam LMB? I really hope it's the former, like LeftAlt is block when dual-wielding or something and we have independent control over either hand rather than both hands being controlled by LMB. Thoughts?

While the former/individual hand control would be pretty cool for fighting while on the defensive, I have a feeling attacking while dual-wielding will just alternate hands, and blocking will just block.

In a similar vein, I hope that the game doesn't just automatically assume everyone's right handed no matter what--Let me put the shield on my right already! I'd rather have everyone be ambidextrous than everyone just be right-handed.

Over-complicates the animations, with little payback. Most games have a hard enough time with convincing block animations that doing it from different angles and directions just isn't worthwhile.

As for dual wielding, I doubt separate controls. Since the actual point of dual wielding _is_ blocking rather than 'Drizzt'-ing people, I can't say I'm too saddened by the idea of alternating stab animations and a double block.

Not really for animations, they just need to be mirrored/flipped which is literally checking a box in most 3D animation programs. I think it'd be cool to have left or right hand dominance be a choice during character creation, haha!

Yeah, it won't be too bad, but it takes away a lot of the control that Skyrim allowed in that regard, when to hit with what weapon and use which enchantment/effect from said weapon. I dual-wielded a sword and dagger. The dagger was in my left (RMB) and had a powerful paralyze on it but I only used it when I needed to, sparingly so it didn't run out of charge too fast, so I guess if it's one button for both hands we can't do that this time around. Oh well, not a huge loss, but would have been nice to have both the control and the ability to block.

like they always said:
left to attack, right to block, with all weapons.
I guess it'll be like simple left click: attack with main weapon holding left click: attack with both weapons

however, I never understood why in Skyrim you should be able to block with only 1 dagger equipped but not with 2 swords equipped.
