Blog Suggestions

Post » Sun Dec 15, 2013 1:03 am

I'm seriously planning on including an in-depth diary for my character and linking it to the forum, in the "About Me" section in my member's profile. I was going to use Blogger, but unfortunately it's been Googled (linked to loads of other sites like Youtube), so I'll have to find something else that's either just as good or almost as good. Anyone know what I can use that'll allow me to do verbose entries, as well as maybe including pictures?

Could you explain what you mean by "Google'd" better? Blogger has been a Google product since... almost its release. Blogger is themeable and pretty much everything on it disable-able. So, what's your problem with it?

As far as 100% free blogging, Blogger is the best option IMO.

I mean it now includes my real name rather than my character's name, because Google has had the bright idea to link all the sites together. So now whatever I do or say on one site is instantly accessable to everyone on another site. This blog is meant to be for my character, not for me, so I don't want to be using my own name. As far as I can see there's no way around it unless I use my character's name for my entire Google account, which I don't want to do.

Well, no.

I used Blogger for years before Google bought them.

Don't use Blogger now because trying to retrieve my password doesn't work...the reactivation e-mail sent to a yahoo mail account seems to get all jumbled up for some reason. Funny how that never seems a problem for people with gmail.

Meanwhile, in answer to the original question, consider fanfiction.net.

I haven't been forced to associate my Blogger with Google+. Also, you can create a separate account just for Blogger.

It was available for less than 4 years before Google bought it up. It was bought up before most people on here even had broadband Internet. It was bought up before Windows XP, hell, before Windows 2000!

IMO, that qualifies it for almost since release.

2004? 2005? I'm sure I had XP, and would think most people had broadband. I think it was probably a couple years after that before it got really 'integrated' into Google too. No big deal though...in fact if I'd wanted to keep using Blogger I wasn't mad at Google or anything, I'm sure the integration improved the service overall. It was just time for me to move on.

Still think for the purpose at hand fanfiction.net is better suited. Arvil Bren's Journal was written on Blogger, but it's much easier reading on its new site by all reports.

Whoops, my bad, I had misremembered the startup year as the purchase year (which was still before 2004 or 2005: 2003)

fanfiction.net first of all isn't a blogging platform AFAIK. Secondly, Blogger is many times more customizable than Fanficiton.net, as such it can be much better if you put in the effort. Obviously if you just stick with the default blogger, it's pretty meh, but many free skins exist that make it much much nicer.

It isn't a blogging platform, no disagreement there. I suggested it because for the purpose at hand (journal of an ES game character) a blogging platform isn't necessarily the best choice. I did it that way myself (may have been the only way at the time), but discovered that the reverse chronology is actually a bit of a pain in the butt for readers if they come in after the story is well established. The skins may be great, but the format isn't ideal. Adding new material chapter by chapter at the end makes it possible for people to 'read through until they catch up', which seems to make them happier.

PS...to the best of my knowledge I'm the original 'journal of an ES game character' writer, so I'm not giving this recommendation from a vacuum.
