Board Games

Do any of you play board games? What are your favourites?

I've never really been that into them. I have played Monopoly (am a huge risk taker - I either win big or lose horrifically), and various less complicated games that run on rails. There is also one that me and the wife play, but that's a bit too mature for this board! Yesterday I had a bit of a yearning to play Civilization with my wife. Having spoke with a colleague about his board games a couple of weeks before, I decided to buy the board game version off of trusty Amazon.

It just got delivered. I've opened it up, ruffled through the manual and so far have no idea how somebody came up with a method for laying such a complicated game on a board! Anyway, I'm very excited about trying this out this afternoon (the only benefit to being off sick) with my wife. Has anybody played this? Any tips for making it easy to get into for a first time board gamer? What games do you play?

I've only played a few board games like Catan, Battlestar Galactica the board game, Risk Legacy, Axis and Allies, World of Warcraft the board game, the LOTR board game and then ofc those old classics like Monopoly, Rummikub, and everything down to the boardgames you play as kids (ludo, snakes and ladders). But I am myself interested in playing more board games and probably will with my friends. Mostly play card games and PnP games but we play the occasional board game too.

No idea about Civilization though, only thing I know is that a couple of my friends suggested it would take immense time to play it so it's not the kind of game to play if you only got 4 hours to burn or so.

I looked at Risk Legacy. Did you open the envelope? I am interested in The Merchant of Venus. One of my many bosses was singing it's praises the other day.

Seeing as there are many envelopes by "the envelope" do you mean the one that must never be opened under any circumstances? We did open a lot of envelopes as the game progressed and we reached the milestones that required us to open envelopes but we never did open the one that must never be opened.

I make up my own with a board from some game called Dragon Hunt. My favorite one is the game I made up where you roll dice and hope your werewolf doesn't go feral if you roll a certain number. My nephew likes playing with role playing dice, so we make games out of it that end up being more fun than my role playing board game I created.

Amazing how a child's interest in dice that isn't six sided can create fun games on its own.

Favourite board/card games atm
Through the Ages
Seven Wonders
Archipelago
Glory to Rome
Le Havre
Race for the Galaxy

All playable in an evening, we don't have the patience for games like the old classic Avalon Hill Civilisation that took 10-12 hours to play a typical game

Some old favourites that I no longer play
Junta
Blackbeard

These games have some great ideas but are too dependent on luck, have rules that cause hours of argument over exactly what they mean etc.

BoardGameGeek is a great site for checking out what people thought of a game, getting rules clarifications, reading articles on strategy etc

I would love to play Squad Leader again, but life is just too short these days.
