Bought my first new vehicle in 14 years....

Post » Sun Jul 14, 2013 6:40 am

The last new car I ever bought was a 1999 Dodge Neon that I owned for 11 years. Since then I've bought used, kept them for a few years then for rid of them. Today, I decided it was time.

My wife and I over the past 7 years have had a rough go of things. We've had to give up stuff. Forgo doing things and have just generally put our needs below that of others. Three months ago we started talking about me trading in my aging 1999 Dodge Dakota. I had mentioned buying another used Dodge truck. But within the last month we've put about $3k in repairs on our 1999.

I started looking at and debating a new vehicle. We were on the fence until a coworker had told me about our employee discount. I started looking at Fords because they were in our price range. After a month of research and debating I pulled then trigger and decided on a lease.

We ended up buying a 2013 Ford F-150 Super Crew with the 3.5L V6 Ecoboost. I've never been a Ford guy;aalways a Dodge guy but I've gotta say. The Ford is well made. And does it have room. I can put then front seats all the way back and still have 8" of legroom between the rear and front seat.

Has anyone else bought a new car in the past few months?

Well I bought one in September of last year. It's not new, but it's the newest car in my family lol. 2010. I wanted something a bit quicker and better looking than my 2004 Sebring and it hasn't dissapointed. I'm still in love (I'm sure you know what I mean by this Tallest and especially you jrexracer) with it. I like to get in and just drive, and pretty much gotta stop myself from doing it every night/ nice day. Can't afford the gas if I drove it that much!

My dad has a late 90's Dakota as well (which he bought used), and he just had to put a round of repairs into it to get it to pass inspection, including new shocks, new brake lines, and wheel realignment. Dodge has always had a good reputation in terms of reliability, but some vehicles just have more problems than others.

I'm personally not a believer in buying new vehicles. If you get a used vehicle, as long as it has around 50,000 miles or fewer and you know someone reputable to check it out, there usually isn't much disadvantage to getting a used vehicle over a new one. Besides, it's always a fraction of the price.

That's a pedal bike. That pic was taken at the dealer I haven't taken any of it at home yet.

In the past few months I've had the front and rear brake lines done, the front and rear brakes done, lower control arms replaced, front end suspension replaced, replaced tje trans cooler, replaced the tires, replaced both oxygen sensors, replaced the Y pipe, had some trans work done, replaced the fuel filler neck. Was informed the trans is on it's way out. Which is what really prompted me to get rid of it. I can't risk it breaking down with my kids in it.

That... that is beautiful. I'm a big coupe fan, though, so when I see well shaped coupe I just stare.

I can't see myself buying a truck (at least as my daily driver) but I love being in big trucks. Tons of room and power makes them pretty fun. My in-laws have this huge Ford F-150 and I could live in the cabin of that thing.

No new cars yet, as we saw in my thread saga. We'll probably keep my Neon for about 2-3 more years if it'll have us and then look into getting a car between 2010-2013 model years. Doesn't mean I don't have a wandering eye, haha.

Is that a Genesis? If so is it the 2.0T or the 3.0V6?

I love the Genesis.

Since buying house I'm always hauling stuff and the past few years all I've bought was used trucks. They are handy. Everyone I talked to said I was stupid for buying a truck and thought I should get a car or SUV. I can't see myself driving either of those. I hate driving my wife's 2002 Subaru Outback Sport. It's not that I dislike driving her car I just prefer trucks.

It's too bad you can never know how much work something's going to need before you embark on the initial repairs :P.

A late 90's Dakota's blue book value is only a few grand (if you're lucky), so putting any more money into it than that is just better spent on a new (or used) vehicle.

Nice ride you got there, Tallest! Congratz on the purchase

When it got to be just me and my mom, we only had a truck that was not running very well. It belonged to my dad so my mom and I were pretty attached to it.

One day at work back in February, someone was asking if I was in the market for a used car. I told him we were, and long story short, we now have a old 'n rusty Buick LeSabre that runs great! (His bro is a mechanic)

Think of http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/8/8a/1996-1999_Buick_LeSabre.jpg but old and rusty

Yup, and most places won't even do a quote for repairs until they have the vehicle in hand. I only got $700 for the trade because it's definitely not aging well. I honestly didn't think I was going to get anything for it.

3.8 V6. It's good fun, great in the corners and makes a nice sound. Not the fastest thing around for sure, but it's much faster than what I used to have. The look of it though is what really sold me, more so than the performance..that was just a bonus. I had known about them before I decided to purchase the car but never thought I'd get one lol.

Yeah those are nice, like I said easy to build up because it has all the internals already and you can just swap this and that out if you want a bigger turbo. I'd have to get the 2013 version though after having the 3.8. And that's if I didn't get the 2013 3.8 lol. But in all honesty my next car will probably have more power. I've sort of caught a disease now. Either a 5.0 Coyote or Z06.
