so I bought an Xbox360...

my younger cousin was visiting from over seas, and since I don't see him that often, I decided to get him a late birthday gift...

we went to a local Pawnshop, grabbed a few used games for him and a used Xbox 360 (as his apparently got the "Red Ring of Death" a few Months ago)..

I then drop him off at my Grandparents where he and his mother were staying, then went to meet a few friends to grab some drinks..

probably about an hour later (can be hard to tell when you have your drink on), my phone rang so I answered it..

it was my Aunt,

Aunt: "thanks for buying Andrew that Xbox, but he says its not working right"..
Me: "hmm... I can't really hear you over the music, give me a second"...
*Stepped outside*
Me: "Okay, whats wrong?
Aunt: "He says its not working"
Me: "hmm...? Okay, put Andrew on.."
Cousin: "Its not working!"
Me: "..and what exactly is the issue?"
Cousin: "the User Interface is all wrong, I can't figure out how to do anything!"
Me: "well, I did buy it used... depending on how old it is, it may be using an Older version of the Dashboard.. the Dashboard has changed alot since the original release.. I'll drop by tomorrow with my old Wireless adapter, see if I can get you some updates.."

So, I get there, plug in the wireless adapter into the USB slot on the back and turn it on...

only to find out, this Xbox360 i just purchased from a Pawnshop for $80, is running off Linux! Ubuntu to be more specific...

I was shocked, and since I don't play consoles anymore (I have become a strict PC Gamer), I swapped it for him with one of my old Xbox360s...

has anyone ever heard of this before?

Sounds like whoever had that 360 before you tampered with its operation system. Not sure if you can return it to the pawn shop. I'd just buy him a new 360 or a used one over at Gamestop.

That's terrible. Return it to the pawn shop.

Somebody messed with the coding and such... FYI: Hacked it.

I would recommend just returning it and getting a Xbox 360 from a more trusted place, like GameStop.

Oh and personally, I find the Xbox 360 a fun and cool console.

Should be able to run games fine unless you try updating the console itself. Updates tend to ruin them when it clashes with the revised OS and Kernel to the point where you can't even repair the thing. Though I'm guessing the person pawned it off because they already did that and knew the pawn shop wouldn't check the console like gamestop would.

It was a noble idea though whoever did it.
