I killed a chicken in Riverwood and now I have a bounty.

Now, everytime I go into the town, kids are running from me and the advlts keep killing me. Someone please tell me what to do to make this stop. I heard that you have to pay off the guards or go to jail but there are no guards in sight. It's only, Fendal (the guy with the love letter and crush on Camilla), Arvor, and a couple other women that just attack me everytime I come close to Riverwood. It seems that I can't kill them (not that I want to) either, they just eat up all my attacks.

Someone please help me before I rage quit.
