Hello RAGE modders and enthusiats! I'm actually an animator at id Software, but I love making mods. Usually I make asset or new weapon mods, but this time I wanted to adjust how the car rewards work in the game. I was actually doing a playthrough of RAGE on my 360 about three weeks ago when I heard that we finally released tools. After I finished, it got me to thinking what would be possible with these tools and since I personally had some things I wanted to see done with our cars, I thought this would be a good opportunity to see if I could adjust this more towards my taste. I installed my PC copy of the game and downloaded the toolkit. While I know a bit about our tools, I mainly use animation software at work, so modding this game is a bit of poking around for me too...only I get to bug my favorite programmers when I have questions.
The main goal of this mod was to give the player a better and repeatable reward for racing. While I was doing my current playtrhough(my 4th at home), I thought it would be great if I could make some money racing to use to buy engineering parts or ammo. Playing the card game is a great and fun way to get some cash, but you need good cards and a lot of time to do it. Pretty much have to be in SubwayTown as well. Since I like the idea of the cars so much and player choice, I thought winning some cash from repeating races would be a fun way for people that don't want to do the other minigames.
I'm very much into player choice and variety and I have always wanted to use some of the great buggies made for the game in the single player campaign. So, I started adding those in as purchasable cars from Rusty as well. They seem to work in all of the Wasteland races, but unfortunately crash if you try to leave town with all of them except the idTech! Racer. This is due to the way the toolkit is building the game, but I believe Steven is working on a fix for that, which may include Wasteland1 in the next update.
One thing I changed that I'm not totally sure about is forcing the player to buy weapons for each of the three cars. I did make the weapons very expensive, $750 for miniguns and $1000 for rockets. You can buy an addtional pair of miniguns for another $750 giving you Quad miniguns. Or you can just buy rockets and not ever use miniguns. I prefer the miniguns myself, though dual just isn't very effective against level 3 enemies. The car parts themselves range from $200 - $600.
I think this mod is functional through the whole game. I'm just not sure about SubwayTown because I'm replacing the current Monarch with my weapon-less version and had to supply Sparky with all of the purchaseable weapons. As a fallback, Rusty in Wellspring also sells them now. I don't have a savegame to test that far. I'm either going to have to play up to that point or release this not knowing exactly what will happen. I hate not testing something, but I've been spending waaaay too much time on this mod every night after work and really just need to be done!
