Hello RAGE modders and enthusiats! I'm actually an animator at id Software, but I love making mods. Usually I make asset or new weapon mods, but this time I wanted to adjust how the car rewards work in the game. I was actually doing a playthrough of RAGE on my 360 about three weeks ago when I heard that we finally released tools. After I finished, it got me to thinking what would be possible with these tools and since I personally had some things I wanted to see done with our cars, I thought this would be a good opportunity to see if I could adjust this more towards my taste. I installed my PC copy of the game and downloaded the toolkit. While I know a bit about our tools, I mainly use animation software at work, so modding this game is a bit of poking around for me too...only I get to bug my favorite programmers when I have questions.

The main goal of this mod was to give the player a better and repeatable reward for racing. While I was doing my current playtrhough(my 4th at home), I thought it would be great if I could make some money racing to use to buy engineering parts or ammo. Playing the card game is a great and fun way to get some cash, but you need good cards and a lot of time to do it. Pretty much have to be in SubwayTown as well. Since I like the idea of the cars so much and player choice, I thought winning some cash from repeating races would be a fun way for people that don't want to do the other minigames.

I'm very much into player choice and variety and I have always wanted to use some of the great buggies made for the game in the single player campaign. So, I started adding those in as purchasable cars from Rusty as well. They seem to work in all of the Wasteland races, but unfortunately crash if you try to leave town with all of them except the idTech! Racer. This is due to the way the toolkit is building the game, but I believe Steven is working on a fix for that, which may include Wasteland1 in the next update.

One thing I changed that I'm not totally sure about is forcing the player to buy weapons for each of the three cars. I did make the weapons very expensive, $750 for miniguns and $1000 for rockets. You can buy an addtional pair of miniguns for another $750 giving you Quad miniguns. Or you can just buy rockets and not ever use miniguns. I prefer the miniguns myself, though dual just isn't very effective against level 3 enemies. The car parts themselves range from $200 - $600.

I think this mod is functional through the whole game. I'm just not sure about SubwayTown because I'm replacing the current Monarch with my weapon-less version and had to supply Sparky with all of the purchaseable weapons. As a fallback, Rusty in Wellspring also sells them now. I don't have a savegame to test that far. I'm either going to have to play up to that point or release this not knowing exactly what will happen. I hate not testing something, but I've been spending waaaay too much time on this mod every night after work and really just need to be done!

Awesome, definitely looking forward to trying this one out especially with all the fancy new buggies

I was just about to start a new play through (taking a break from work on my own mod for the weekend, there's only so much doomscript I can take) so I'll hold off and start a new game with the mod and play up through to subway town and see how that works out.

I'm putting this up in its current state since i don't know when the next toolkit update will happen. I deleted the 1.3gb of page files that were generated, because I really don't think anything new was created other then gui graphics I added, and that seems to be in the dlc_vmtr. However, browesing throug it, I did notice some of my larger cash reward tgas were missing. Those ones are from the subway town races, so perhaps adding that to the build will generate them(not possible with this version of the toolkit). I'm not sure, but sending out 1.3gb of redundant texture page data seems pretty inefficient so I yanked it from the mod. You should still win the money, you just won't see the amount at the end of the race.

After I took that out I went back and played up to right after you get awarded the cuprino. Seems to be working ok. Load times seem a bit on the ridiculous side unfortunately. Been a while since I played un-modded PC version, but I don't remember them being that long.

Whoa, thanks a ton for this mod Brett. I know how those late nights are, been awhile since I did any serious gaming again, but I'll be psyched to try this out. I actually thought the whole racing cert/money segregation was a bit oddball (although I can see the potential design/balancing problems it might solve) so this is a pleasant surprise to log in and see.

Also wanted the chance to try out some of the different looking vehicles, as I expected a bit more of a range rather than a linear upgrade (although I'm easy, just wasn't the route I'd go) so this probably is more to my taste in that sense as well.

Just have to find the time to run it. My comp is loaded with id and Bethesda games and most of them are amazingly huge.

Cheers Brett, it works fine here for me, I've won a few of the races in Wellspring and they seem to run fine with the $ amount showing up at the end. The only weird thing I've noticed is when you get to the choose vehicle gui when talking to slim, switching vehicle resets slims textures and then slowly refreshes him taking about a minute or so for it to get back to normal.

But it all works fine just that odd graphical glitch, I'm trying to play through up to subway town and see how that goes at that track.

Thanks for checking it out everyone.

I think you are correct Octopus, the cert thing was an attempt to balance and separate the car stuff from the fps stuff. It was kind of inteneded to be unintrusive if you didn't want to do it. I was always pushing for it to be a little more involved, but hey...I'm just an animator! I guess this mod is my attempt to put it how I'd like. I think I might have overpriced the weapons a bit though. Hard to say without doing a proper playthrough. I guess from my point of view, you may want to upgrade the car but not do the races. So, having one currency makes better sense.

As for your graphic glitch Barry, I am not surprised. I had a strange glitch when I updated the car icons in Rusty's inventory from my first pass. They looked fine when testing in idStudio, but when I built the mod and looked at it in the real game, it was using my first pass icons and not the current ones. I did a verify tool integrity to get the tools back to normal, deleted generated and then put my source files back in to solve the problem. However, it still sounds like some kind of texture cache issue. I honestly don't know that much about the .pages, so perhaps my deleting them had consequenes. Meaning, my stuff could have still been cached somewhere so I don't see the issue on my system. I'd hate to uninstall the game to check though. It's such a beast.

It would be good to get a writeup on how the .vt pages cache resources for tools. I had some issues adding custom stamps that seemed like a cache issue, but I never had enough time to sort it out. (been on a freelance gig so my modding is on hold)

Darn. Thanks for letting me know. Haven't had time to get that far myself. Could be a variety of reasons, but most likely because it needs subway town as part of the build. In an effort to debug it I tried copying the real map into the toolkit at work but none of my decl edits had any effect. Very strange. Gonna have to do a clean install of the toolkit and give it another shot.

Well, not so fast)) My testing shows that subway town loads with new purchased vehicle at rusty.
So when I first time loaded subwaytown, Sparky didn't have any new items, then I go to wellspring and bought idtech 5 buggy, put every upgrade, have a race, then I went back to subway town - game crashed! However I tried again the same, but this time I bought scorcher buggy and subwaytown loaded and sparky had scorcher buggy items for purchase. So maybe it has something to do with different type of buggies.
Note:
Confirm texture errors for new vehicles icons at rusty's, also racing vehicle select shows corrupted textures for every vehicle, racing reward icon after racing completion also have corruption.
Also new purchased vehicle does not appear at your garage until you participate in racing, then it appears and you can drive in wastland.
And I didn't realise how to use both rockets and machinguns at the same time, I could only choose one type.

Thanks for testing dav. The upgrade just let's you have both rockets and miniguns on the buggy at the same time. But you can't fire them at the same time. Just switch like the other vehicles.

Another person had a problem with the textures, so I'm wondering if the whole 1.3gb page files are needed. Kind of svck, but oh well. I reinstalled everything at home but need to play to that point to see what happens with textures. I actually first uploaded the whole thing before deciding to remove all the page files. Oh well, at least a good test. Are you playing the English version. Not sure why that would be an issue, but the strings are only in English. I think I could add them to the other languages, just wouldn't be translated.

Hmmm, interesting about the scorcher buggy in subway town. Could you actually go in the eastern wasteland with it? I'm more surprised that Sparky actually had parts for it. Did he have the quad miniguns or just the standard stuff. I'm guessing just the standard. Not surprised that some would work and others wouldn't.

If you can, while in subway town garage or vendor, does it show the cuprino as cuprino mk.ii? Also if you win the monarch it should say monarch mk.ii if the job and race decl worked. Thanks!

Lol...yeah, the cars don't show up until a level loads unfortunately.

I uninstalled both the game and the toolkit and then reinstalled both. Played from the beginning of the game up to wellspring, then gave myself enough cash to buy all the buggies. I didn't notice any graphical glitches in the gui's. All item icons showed up at Rusty's. The dual mini-gun icon and the mini-gun crossed with a rocket launcher, etc. All the car icons showed up in the vendor screens and the choose your buggy in the race menu as well. The money icon at the end of the race worked too.

I'm kind of at a loss as to why some people have corrupt graphics. Only thing I can think of is either graphics memory or perhaps general driver issues or custom config tweaks? In the options menu I have the texture cache set to Large, but no other fancy tweaks on my end.

Well, actually it doesn't really matter that much! I first of all like to see my car model, look at its upgrades)))
What really matters if you can continue to eastern wastlands without game crushing!

Yes, any crashing is bad, but a complete game stopper is horrible. I've been playing with some subwayTown stuff, but not having any luck buidling. I may have to get rid of all the extra buggies and just have the weapon upgrades and money rewards from races.

Were you actually able to win money from a subwayTown race?

Question for Bret/IDav:

Do you mean i have to play this Mod with regular car (Cuprino/Dune) then enter Subwaytown then go back to Wellspring to buy Scorcher so that i can enter Subwaytown without crashing?
Thanks guys.

I'm not totally sure since i don't have a PC savegame that far. I think if you bought any of the cars(except the scorcher one, possibly others), it'll probably crash when you try to goto SubwayTown. Once you buy them, they get stuck in your inventory and the game tries to populate the garage with them. So, if it can't find one, because of the way mods are built, it will crash. There might be a way to discard them, such as "drop inventory/keys/bp_buggy_idtech_racer, etc. But I haven't tried it, but I'll do that next.

I did just make a build that doesn't allow you to buy the new buggies, but still lets you buy quad miniguns, and keeps all of the car stuff in $ instead of racing certs. That's more for future. Savegames already started with this mod will still crash if you bought certain cars and try to enter subwayTown. I might replace the mod with that if the subwayTown crashing can't be solved....however....

I don't know if it will fix the subwayTown crashing or not, but I'm hoping it does. I don't think it will fix the Eastern Wasteland races crashing or general wasteland crashing unfortunately.

I came up with a "fix" for this. I made hidden jobs for each buggy which you get automatically when you first speak with Rusty. Each time you buy one from him it triggers the job complete which activates a vehicle respawn trigger. I couldn't find a way to trigger those simply from buying the car.

Currently I have these showing up as "jobs" in your dossier. They could also be hidden, but you still get the gong sound when they appear and are completed. One interesting thing about converting them to jobs is that I could make them become aviailable at different times in the game. For instance, the Ghost Buster wouldn't be available until after the second ghost hideout mission, or Dan's buggy would appear after he's gone and as a Job board item.

Test results:
-Wellspring is dead, couldn't even load! (may be it's just for me)
-Subwaytown loaded, Sparky has all new vehicles as well as upgrades, however still can't go to wasteland with new buggy. Racing is working, you get money rewards, exepct for The Shipyard race map, it crashes whenever you try to play with new buggy. And that's strange, because if this issue has something to do with eastern wasteland location, then why Gearhead valley works fine?
