Brads merged Deus Ex discussion

Also, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_in_video_gaming#Notable_releases has a list of notable games released in 2000. I don't see how Deus Ex can be said to compare unfavourably to any of them, graphically...

Yes, but the mouse lags in the menus and changing it is so awkward! Curse you Onlive for non-standard controls! They probably re-bound them because some keyboard keys such as Alt+O are used for OnLive's navigation. I don't know. Probably just give the game a miss now...

You're going to give up because the mouse lags a bit?!

Talk about first world problems.

You ought to go through the menus using the arrow keys?

Sounds like it, because you definitely don't have the default controls. Just take a few minutes to rebind them. Trust me, Deus Ex is an experience that you don't want to miss out on.

No, I mean that the mouse feels all laggy even in the game itself. Strange because, in newer games that I'd assume to be more difficult work for the service such as Human Revolution, OnLive runs flawlessly on my internet connection.

I may rebind them. However, the game blatantly isn't running too well on the service so I may just give it a miss. Not too fussed about playing the original to be honest, despite how much people rave about it.

It will take minutes to go through and return them all to default keybindings, even if you do it manually. if you map them back to default then you don't even really have to think about it.

It's obviously unplayable as your controls are messed up, it's nothing to do with the game or gameplay itself, the solution is simple if you want to play it...
Resetting the controls to default doesn't reset them to what the game's manual, having looked online, says. Mouse lag is also a issue and, frankly, I don't really want to buy the game. Probably just give it a miss, but thanks for the suggestions everyone.

That's pretty miserable of them. Weird bindings I could probably overlook (although those are really weird) but mouse problems must make the game unplayable.

It's $10 on Steam, but you can always wait for it to go on sale and pick it up then. It's definitely worth it if you enjoyed HR.

Agreed. I'll happily admit the first Thief had kind of fugly characters, even for the time, but Deus Ex was on par with other major releases.

I wonder if something about OnLive is screwing with the graphics as well?

Unfortunately it was on sale this weekend, so it will probably be a while until it is again.

Games were directx 7/3DFX back then. I remember:
Soldier of Fortune (Raven/id tech 2 modified)
Hitman: Codename 47 (IO)
No One Lives Forever (Monolith)

for best graphics.

NOLF was the best, by far. The others really weren't that far from Deus Ex.

I know the controls, but they are literally all really dodgy. As I said, left-mouse button is quick save and X is crouch! I know I could rebind them, but that will take forever.

If you're not willing to put in the two minutes it will take to rebind the controls then you won't enjoy Deus Ex anyway. And the graphics aren't bad for 2000. Check out all the other FPSs that came out around the same time. They're about the same.

Have you played any games from 2000?

It wasn't bad graphically.

It takes about an hour to get used to a new control scheme, and about five minutes maximum to remap the controls. I can guarantee you'll be playing Dues Ex for longer than an hour.

However, the game blatantly isn't running too well on the service so I may just give it a miss.
Yeah, that has happened to me a lot when trying to run older games. I have an old XP around specifically for playing old games for this reason.

You could dig up the demo and see what you think of that. It lets you play through the entire first mission, as I recall, which is a decent chunk of gameplay. If you find yourself enjoying it, you can keep an eye out for a sale (there's a thread for that around here somewhere).

Deus Ex had a couple of weird button choices (semicolon for weapon reloading) but left mouse button to quicksave is definitely not default.
I wonder if something about OnLive is screwing with the graphics as well?
Well OnLive is a compressed video stream, that already hurts the graphics. Input lag issues would be problems with OnLive too.

It's an interesting service but it certainly has its issues. Could be that the game is not properly fixed on OnLive too. I remember having to use the http://kentie.net/article/dxguide/ to fix some issues, such as the game running in 16 bit by default, having mouse acceleration, a too large HUD, etc. Better to just buy the game from Steam or GOG and play it on your own system, it's not very system intensive and it'll run a lot smoother than an OnLive stream. If you have a somewhat decent PC you can run some graphics mods as well.

On the subject of graphics mods are there any that you recommend? I really like Deus Ex so far but everything is really green.

ENB series would likely do you well. You can use a palette shader with that to change the overall tone of the picture.

Also for anyone looking to get Deus Ex. http://www.gog.com/gamecard/deus_ex

Drm free, some extras as well.

http://www.moddb.com/mods/new-vision. It replaces most of the world textures. It also comes with a DirectX10 based renderer.

I am at the start of the game, where there is an attack on Sarif Industries and prior to you becoming augmented. How do I get past all the guys without killing anyone? I know how to for the rest of the game, thanks to the tranquillizer rifle and stuff like that...

It's pretty hard to get through all those sections without being seen at all, but the further you get through a room without being seen, the shorter the dash to the exit will be. So yeah, use cover and try to sneak your way across whenever possible.

You can't. Well, maybe at the beginning there is some way. I'm not sure. I've never really tried. But there are points later in the game where you will be forced to kill an enemy.

You can't.

It is possible to play through the game without killing anybody but bosses.

In the very beginning you have to rely entirely on stealth to get through Sarif Industries - and that's very tough if you've never played through it before. Once you "really" start the game (post-augmentation) you can use take-downs and non-lethal weapons to do the job.

Ugh, OnLive. Nice idea, but I don't see it working as intended for at least 5 more years or so. The technology just isn't there yet.

Also, if it means gaming without mods it's pretty much a deal-breaker for me. But I digress...

Yes, DX was always the ugly stepchild of the FPS and RPG genres, but as was famously said: though it may not look like much, she's got it where it counts. Deus Ex with ENB looks quite nice actually (for a relative value of "nice" anyway.) It adds that little extra - a spot of bloom here, some SSAO darkening there, moodier indirect lighting - to make its immersive world pop a bit more. The neon streets of Hong Kong particularly come to life. It's a pretty subjective effect though, as I know some won't be able to see past the odd artefact it conjures up, but for my money it's well worth the installation. I use a tried and tested INI file that I painstakingly optimised for what I felt was an ideal balance of effects (the default setting uses way too much bloom, I find.)

See for yourself: http://i50.tinypic.com/2q9i6o1.jpg - http://i49.tinypic.com/14avhiq.jpg

Just paste this over your regular enbseries.ini file:

Stealth rolling from cover to cover and save scumming is how I did it. You do need very good timing for a couple of points but in the last room you only need to get about half way and then you can rush to the cutscene.
