Breaking your oath

Post » Tue Jun 05, 2012 7:24 pm

I find something in the game very odd. Imagine you join the Empire and the Dark Brotherhood with your character. The first oath you swear to Tullius is to serve the emperor and to do everything he says, basically. However, if you are part of the DB, you must kill the emperor to finish the questline. I believe that, if your character is minimally noble, he/she should not be involved in these two guilds or groups at the same time, because they basically contradict each other. What do you think? :drag:

Joining a bunch of assassins isn't all that noble in the first place, is it?

The emperor was a pain in the ass anyways so it's for the best to assassinate his weak ass.

Well, it depends. In the description for the Neutral Good alignment in some of my D&D games, it states "If good can only come about through the overthrow of existing social order, so be it." Whether or not they would resort to murder, I cant say. A bloodthirsty tyrant, maybe, but not necessarily an ineffectual ruler.
So if you think the only way to strengthen the Empire would be to remove Titus, then you might resort to removing him from power.

It is contradictory. Unless you're some kind of sociopath, you have no business being a part of the Dark Brotherhood and the Imperial Legion at the same time.

There should have been a second opportunity to work for the Penitus Oculatus later in the story.

I didn't like having to swear loyalty to either side, no one is worthy of being my king/emperor...i'd rather have the choice to be a trusted mercenary

Yeah, a lot of the guilds/factions would seem to have conflicting ideologies/goals, but I figure Bethesda wants us to be able to experience as much as possible on few characters because not everyone has the time and/or desire to create 10 characters.

Huh...what? I thought I heard my name. :P

I side with the Empire and I killed the Emperor. It's easy to roleplay:

You stand for the Empire. A true person who cares for the good of the Empire will speak out against an incompetent Emperor. Titus Mede failed miserably to combat the Thalmor. My Neutral Chaotic character sees that and the fact that Titus Mede doesn't have dragon blood, as means to kill him.

Or for RP purposes, my character is striving to eventually become the Empress, and realizes she needs as many allies as possible. Becoming the head of the College of Winterhold and the Companions gives her clout, while becoming Listener and Guild Master secures her powerful secret allies.

I honestly didn't take the oath seriously. Since I'm a follower of Ulfric and if for any reason he becomes what I hate once the moot declares him High king of Skyrim I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to kill him. He can shout at me all he wants. I can block it with my ward spell and then launch towards him with my dual conjuration swords. I honestly don't want to kill Galmar, since theirs a feathery son type relationship going on with my character, but if he tries to kill me in defending Ulfric I would wouldn't hesitate to kill him either.

Personally, I think you're crazy. :P Seriously though: on my 1st playthrough (warrior dude) I did all of the guilds except for TG and DB. On my 2nd one (assassin chick) I did (am still doing...kinda') all of them. I did it this way because I feel the need to help as many people as possible because I have the power and I feel badly not helping all of the guilds in both playthroughs. Maybe the TG isn't very "helpful" (I feel like we aren't done with them and that expansions may add questlines so they may be able to redeem themselves.) and the DB to an extent isn't very "helpful" either, but, yeah, helping all of them could serve to unify Skyrim. Having said that I know a lot of people don't see it that way and do mulitiple playthroughs selecting only questlines that fit their character, but others don't have the time or desire to play through several times.

I like to play all the questlines for every character, because I always find new ways to go about it. For the first time in this playthrough, I went through the Companions quests guns blazing and running full tilt. VERY different than my usual sneakiness.

I did that in reverse order. :P My warrior dude is good-ish and my assassin chick isn't evil exactly...just kinda' naughty. The sneaky way is a little more fun I hate to admit. :o

On My Dark elf Assassin I didn't feel like there was a conflict iven i finished the Dark Brotherhood questing before signing up to the legion.

I pretty much justified it that my character was initially supportive of the stormcloaks who helped him escape then was given pause seeing the conditions in Windhelm. Finally afrter progressing through his career in the Dark brotherhood ready to assassinate this "cowardly Emperor who sold out Talos" he had heard so much about, he was impressed with the dignity and courage he showed in the face of his demise that he came to the conclusion that there was still courage left in the Empire, so he fulfilled the man's last request and then joined the legion!

Seemed to make sense to me given the order I did them in.

If you join the Stormcloacks and then doublecross them, you will skip the oath-thing. Perfect for a shady assasin character with no true allegiances.

Nobility is something you are born with, not what you work towards.
