Breton Magic Resistance

Post » Thu Jun 07, 2012 5:08 am

Ok, so my character I made a week ago or so, I decided to make a breton mage, and I did this because I heard they have a resistance to magic, all magic, and when i start up my character, I check the active effects, and see 25 percent magic resistance, only to just go through a loading screen that says bretons are supposed to have 50 percent magic resistance, was this updated? Or is this a very annoying glitch?

Sounds like a typo for the loading screen.

Yeah, 50% would be extremely unbalanced.

Wasn't it 50 in the other games though? At least in Oblivion I thought it was.

Best characteristic of any race, that. IMO.

Which is why Breton were arguably the best race all around in Oblivion.....but not so in Skyrim.

Yes it was 50% resistance in Oblivion, and Morrowind as I recall. But magic was also much stronger in Oblivion.

It is not unusual for loading screens to be wrong. Oblivion had incorrect loading screens too. My guess is that at one time the resistance was 50% and Bethesda adjusted it down for balance after the loading screen was finished.

Loading screens also tend to refer to Azura, Mephala, Meridia, and Vermina as 'princes' even though they are female. Ought to be 'princess'.

This isn't a mistake. Daedric Princes have no inherent gender and although some choose to appear in a feminine form, "Prince" is usually used when referring to any of them. Boethiah, for instance, has been described as male or female, depending on the source. I've only ever come across a phrase "Daedric Princess" once, in Invocation of Azura.

Yeah it's meant to be 25%, the loading screen is wrong. Even at 25% it is a brilliant ability, I think one of THE best racial powers in the game. With that 25% magic resistance, along with very useful Dragonskin ability recharging your own magicka.....

Roll over Iron Helmet Viking Dovahkiin, the Breton mage is the ultimate dragonslayer :D

Unless you're trying to play a Breton conjurer and absorb half of your own summons. Or did they fix this already...?

Add in the resistances from the Alteration tree and one or two items and it can get sick..... my Breton had I think 75% or so....

Nope. Look at your powers. You have Dragonskin. Does quite a bit of magic resistance, pretty sure it`s also 25, which would add up to 50.

Edit: Whoops, I was wrong. Dragonskin gives you a 50% resistance, not 25.

Bretons can run around with 70% magic resistance and 80% magic absorb with no items at all. No need to even use their special power at all to be honest.

I still think they are the best "default" race unless you just want to play another character. Starting skills don't mean much past a couple levels.

It's been modded out, but nothing in the vanilla version...

No. "Prince" is not necessarily a gender-specific term.
