Brink on the surface

Post » Mon Jan 03, 2011 8:13 pm

I was talking to my friend when an ad for Brink showed up on his computer. I said "Yay Brink!"; His answer "F*** Brink". He then told me how everything in Brink was already being done in other games.

Parkour-Mirror's Edge, Assasins Creed, Battlefield Bad Company 2

Teamplay-Team Fortress 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2

Customization-Call of Duty, Lots of MMOs

Graohics- Every other shooter with fairly realistic graphics

Brink does all these things but the way it does it is different

Parkour- SMART uses the geomtry of the level rather than specfic instances or button presses(altough they kept the button press in too)

Teamplay- Players are bribed with XP to help each other rather than letting players go lone wolf

Customization- Guns and characters are fully customizable rather than only having certain weapon attachments or just clothing options

Graphics- Exaggeration to make everything in the world look hyper realistic

Brink also has a story built into its multiplayer that most other shooters don't have.

Unfortunately, all of these things must be played to be truly understood so until it comes out or has a demo, Brink will be looked at as just another generic FPS to people who haven't researched througly into the game.

Does anyone have any other ideas I could convince my friend that Brink is something different?:

Ask him what he gets frustrated at in games. lets say CoD right? if he gets mad about how their are so many snier explai nthat only short rifles. what about if he wants to get over an obstacle to get a btr vantage point. SMART. just get his dislikes and give him BRINK.

Parkour and BFBC2?

Anyway, Brink does things that have been done, but those things aren't done that much in shooters.
There's a difference between something that's already been done and the millionth "Communist-country-comes-to-[censored]-up-US-of-A" shooter.

And besides, Brink unites these, and even if a game isn't revolutionary, if the overall package(sound, graphics and most of all balance) are good and well put together it is a good game.

But i bet he got Call of Duty 'cause he though it was awesome and original sigh

tell him that even if brink's features has been done before in other games, Brink is different 'cause it has all those features in the same game

I feel your pain.

Brink is the hybrid of all good things from othes games, while maintaining it's own uniqueness. SD is not such a big company, but they are gamers and they make games that they want to play themselves. I think they removed a lot of features that cause a lot of complaining/annoyance in other games.

Teamplay- Players are bribed with XP to help each other rather than letting players go lone wolf

While it is not entirely false, the whole point of XPs is to show how useful you were to the team. Most shooters will show a leaderboard at the end ranking people by the number of kills done, whereas Brink will show how useful you actually were to the team when compared to other players...

Brink is all about teamwork, nothing more. No killstreaks, no K/D ratios, team bonuses instead of individual bonuses, etc. Oh, and keeping things balanced. If the game realises that one team is definitely overpowering the other, instead of rewarding it, it will try to give a boost to the other to balance things out and make the game abit more interesting for everyone.

Parkour-Mirror's Edge, Assasins Creed, Battlefield Bad Company 2 Mirror's Edge is a valid argument, because the mechanics are very similar to BRINK (but much more complex), Assassin's Creed ... well, is an open world third-person adventure game; Bad Company 2 doesn't have anything like Parkour; not even the mechanics COD does support (climbinb/vaulting onto/over stuff), it does have a jump and that's it.

Teamplay-Team Fortress 2, Battlefield Bad Company 2 Not to forget the Counterstrike series and every MMO which includes raid-instances

Customization-Call of Duty, Lots of MMOs COD does not have proper customisation, even in Blops it's laughable. Rainbow Six Vegas 2 had similar customisation to BRINK; most MMOs still don't offer as much customisation as BRINK does, because they cripple themselves with stat-based equipment.

Graohics- Every other shooter with fairly realistic graphics BRINK doesn't have a realistic, but hyperrealistic artstyle. It's more cartoonish, than real.

Tell your friend he should get his facts straight.

If everyone thinks like this, BRINK will not be a mainstream game, which can be both good and bad

And BRINK do contain stuff from other games, but really, one can't be original with stuff nowdays, however, one can be original with the mix-up and the altering of the things one puts into a game

And having these elements is... a downside? I'm REALLY confused by your friend's logic. I mean seriously, what would Brink have to have to win your friend's approval? Have each disk come with $500? Because I know that's something other games haven't done.

EDIT:

+1 on REV's post.

You should probably tell your friend to stop playing video games if he thinks Brink is a copy and paste for the most part. Since really any game you can say has elements of or large chunks of some other game in some form. Its kind of like that episode of south park where butters goes insane because the simpsons have done everything and he can't be original..Well same thing applies to video games typically if you look hard enough for a connection.

He was very tired so I don't blame him too much. Also, I think he likes slower strategy games rather than fast paced shooters. I haven't had my 360 for too long so I was guessing at similar games. I just think its interesting seeing a different perspective of why someone might not like Brink.

It seems that your friend lurks /v/, because.. that's practically most people's views on there. It's like they refuse to have fun with games at times.

Being as I am relatively new to video games in general (only been on XBL for a year, and have played Halo pretty exclusively up until recently) I can't compare Brink to other games with any amount of fact, but I think it looks wildly fun, social, and strategic. I was intrigued by the cinematic trailer awhile back and looked it up more detail on their website and got hooked. Anyways, I could care less if what Brink does is new or not (eventually, as one above poster wrote, we're gonna hit a point where originality will be a problem). I like the idea of the story behind the Brink campaign and I like what the overall gameplay looks like. That's all I need to know to keep learning about it at the very least (a preorder is very likely in my near future).

Wait, so you made the initial list? Because in the OP it sounded like your friend did.

Also, the OP implied your friend was a fan of shooters - if he doesn't like shooters anyway, it wouldn't be too surprising that he wouldn't like Brink.
