Broken terrain - Cells are at different heights and are appe

Post » Mon Nov 19, 2012 1:56 am

Hey everyone -

this is probably pretty basic, but I still haven't figured it out.
After a while of working, probably after fiddling with LOD, the terrain in CK appears such that some cells are at different height from others.
This also visible in Skyrim itself.

On my computer it looks OK on both CK and Skyrim, but on my friend's it's broken.

Tried to add images but the forum won't let me post any kind of links - will gladly accept advice on that too

Any ideas?

Thanks!

EDIT: Troublshooting, I tried copying the Meshes folder to a backup and erasing it. That caused everything to be broken on my computer too :( Help!

You can't post links here until you've made a few posts (5 or someting, I think), we all suffered under that.

As for your troubles ... oh wow ... I have no idea how you've managed to do what you've done, nor how you can easily fix it.

If you have not done much modding - or you don't want to keep what you have done - then I think I would reinstall both Skyrim and the CK.

(but hang on, maybe someone else here has a less destructive way to proceed?)

I don't know how much modding you have done? But if it isn't much, starting with LOD and exterior worldspaces is very brave indeed :(

Never save your mod after generating LOD with the CK. There's a bug somewhere that sometimes messes up your mod (in the manner you describe) and is irreversible. If you're lucky, there may be a backup in the Skyrim\Backup\ folder with the naming format -
YourMod.esp.0.bak
YourMod.esp.1.bak
YourMod.esp.2.bak...etc

Also note that the highest number may not be the latest backup, so sort the folder by date. To use the backups, just remove the .1.bak or .2.bak from the end of the filename.

Good luck.

Does it look something like this in creation kit?

If so, I had a similar problem that was solved by deleting all of the LOD files in Data/Meshes/Terrain (I just deleted the entire terrain folder, but you may want to check to see what's inside it first)

It looks (looked) exactly like that - I deleted the entire Meshes folder, to no avail.

Thanks to everyone who replied - I guess the bug mentioned was the cause and whatever we tried we couldn't automatically undo the issue.

Since the world we created is relatively small, we worked around it by surrounding the entire world with cliffs and then manually, painstakingly "softened" the entire terrain to be even. That caused f*kloads of static objects in the air or buried underground, but the alternative was restoring to a backup from 10 work hours ago... So we settled whatever we could back on the ground and a lot of stuff will remain buried forever.

I can't wholeheartedly complain when such a modding tool as the CK is freely provided, but s*t, Bethesda...

P.S., @h4vent - This is my first mod, I have ZERO experience with it. It's also a school project which I have no intention of using later, so I could afford leaving the entire world outside our small bit broken. If the creation kit Wiki was clearer as to the correct pipeline I should have taken, I would have. But it isn't. Whatever information there is partial, and the forums are little use to anyone who just starting. Anyway, this is the best way to learn :)

You'll be just fine if you keep that same attitude, throughout :)
