Brynjolf 'A cornered rat' 'Taking care of business' Glitch B

Post » Sat May 19, 2012 9:38 pm

This is a walkthrough of exactly what I did

I'm following the main storyline. I'm doing the mission 'A cornered rat' in-which I have to go to 'Riften' and talk to 'Brynjolf'. Doing so, I learn that he'll only help me if I help him first. So I unlock Modesi's stall and unlock the chest that contains the ring. I then plant the ring with 'Brand-Shei'. After successfully planting the ring it tells me to speak with 'Brynjolf'. I do so and he tells me to meet him in the 'Ragged Flagon'. I immediately go to the 'Ragged Flagon' in which I notice he's currently not there yet. I walk around the area and talk to all the people; I talked to bartender in which I bribe him 487gold coins or something to give me the information (I then received an 'Achievement'). I then find Esbern and bring him back to Riverwood which completes said quest. After which I go back to Riften to finish my previous quest; I go back to the 'Ragged Flagon' and I then wait every hour so that I don't miss the moment he actually goes there. After 48 hours, I'm doubtful he's actually coming. I go back to see that he's still standing in his 'stall'. It also seems as though the merchants are still 'distracted'; 'Brand-Shei' is still sitting on that box and everyone is looking at Brynjolf.

I've tried attacking Brynjolf hoping for a reset; No luck.
I've tried purposefully failing a pick-pocket from 'Brand-Shei' which caused me to be attacked but eventually they all went back to the same spot when it was all over.

I'm extremely frustrated.
I'm hoping that this detailed 'walkthrough' helps in reproducing this problem.

Did you use the Ratway to get to the Ragged Flagon?

Yes, I'm unaware of any other way to get there.

I think there's a conflict between some quests linked to Brynjolf and the introduction to the thieves guild. I wonder if being a thieves guild member before making other secondary quests linked to the guild would solve this issues.

Isn't that how you get into the Thieves guild?

its ridiculous. It seems the response is "Tough luck" not impressed this is not what to do with a game. I can handle graphic flaws and audio missing in a small part and the odd mad occurance but to not be able to finish THE GAME is down right careless and lazy.

Do you have a save available before you stole/planted the ring? If you do, reload there, plant the ring and wait until the crowd is dispersed. Otherwise, it sounds like there was a trigger conflict, which is happening quite a bit. The best advice I can give you is to be careful about crossing over questlines and make sure you save often so you can always revert. Sorry man.

Yep that seems to be the main issue with this quest, I've heard of alot of people having this issue, I have not started diplomatic immunity yet but am worried this will hit me.

Did you start the thieves guild or civil war quests yet? Seems their may be some relation to these two quests and not getting the cornered rat quest. From what I've heard stating both of those questlines can help you not get this bug.

I can confirm that I am having this issue as well. Finished Diplomatic Immunity and the Cornered Rat quest never appeared in my journal. I only noticed after around 20 hours of doing other things. I have a level 53 character and cannot finish the game. I don't mind a few broken quests or graphics glitches, but this is just unacceptable quality control. I was loving this game until now.

OK, I went back to an old save I had prior to completing Diplomatic Immunity. I went and did Brynholf's pickpocket quest and accepted Taking Care of Business. Went back to Solitude and completed Diplomatic Immunity. I returned to Riverwood and talked to Delphyne annnnd... still no Cornered Rat quest! So I believe I can confirm that the bug has nothing to do with taking/not taking Thieves Guild quests (I should mention that the first playthrough, I never did Brynholf's pickpocket quest).

This is ridiculous. Has anyone found a workaround yet, since apparently Bethesda doesn't think its important to be able to complete the game? I wish I had bought Skyrim on PC so I could get the mod that fixes it (why is it a modder is able to fix the game and Bethesda can't?).

I have the same problem at the moment.

I did the first pickpocking quest Brynjolf gave to me. Then he stated, that I have to talk to Maven. I decided to leave this quest aside for the moment and went my way through the game. Yesterday, I wanted to complete the thieves-quests. However, speaking to Maven is no solution. She's just saying to sentences and is not giving me any mission. Talking to Brynjolf is useless to, I do not even have a choice answering because no dialogue option comes up (he's just talking about not having time to talk to me or something like that).

Very annyoing. I hope, this will be patched after holidays in the next 1.4 patch.

Some people have done MQ just fine, my wife has done 'A Cornered Rat', she is just stuck at a different portion. Im just wondering how you think they dont think its important to fix quest issues like this when they have stated multiple times they plan to address quest issues towards the new year

Your not alone mate. Same thing happened to me. Glitch same as you 3 weeks and level 81 down the drain for my assassin/thief build. Waiting for a patch was not gonna be happy for me so ive rerolled an orc warrior. Guessed rerolling and getting back to where i was will be quicker than waiting for a patch.

I think its a disgrace bugs like this got past testing. And its also a disgrace that it looks like January before we see and quest glitches patched yet 1.3 patch fixes a stupid glitch of mending book cases which they broke themselves in patch 1.2.

I LOL'd at the first part of your reply. "Some people" have finished the MQ? You know what? EVERYBODY should be able to finish the main quest (which apparently even your own wife is unable to do because of some other ridiculous game-breaking bug)! And, no, I don't think Bethesda gives two ***** about whether the MQ is broken because they're too busy collecting their game of the year awards and cashing their checks. This should have been a day one patch. Apparently it isn't that difficult to fix because the modders are doing it.

This isn't a "quest issue," this is an out-of-box failure as far as I'm concerned.

i was able to do the cornered rat quest without a problem but now (100+ hrs later) i decided that id go and join the thieves guild because i am sick of carrying around the unusual gems that add to my encumbrance (bad enough that i can't get rid of the damn flute and guitar).
So i have the same problem with the 'taking care of business' quest.. everyone is still standing around Brynjolf and won't disperse even if i try and kill them, they just go back to the same spot.. the weird thing is Brynjolf is wearing armour cause he was in the Ragged flagon at some point during my 'cornered rat' quest but then he decided to go back to his stand. Obviously this has also made the shopkeepers unaccessible.

My wife was able to finish MQ, found a work around for her. It seems what stops some quests from firing is other quests that are active/have been done, its very possible with as many quests as there are that these did not pop up in QA especially if the QA team is broken up and have different sections of the game to look at as opposed to playing through
