Bug : Gold disappeared from inventory.

Post » Wed May 23, 2012 10:09 pm

During the Holidays, I started a new game after my previous one became unplayable due to lag. I advanced the main story up to 'The Way of the Voice' then focused on the Companion's quest. After finishing the 'Glory of the Dead' quest, I came back to Jorrvaskr to find that most of the dialogue options with the Companions were absent. Thinking it was but a minor glitch, I continued to play and went to Riften to buy myself a new house. I helped Wujeeta overcome her addiction, only to find that she was also missing dialogue options making it impossible for me to do the Skooma related quests.

After failing to find a way around it, I took a look in my inventory where eveything was in its place except for my gold pieces who disappeared from the miscellaneous section. This made it impossible for me to advance the game any further. After searching without success for answers on the internet, I tried replaying my previous save files and of the game before that. It seems that all my save files were afflicted with this bug and that even new games were no different.

After deleting all game data and corrupted save files, disabling auto saves and reinstalling patches, the problem still persisted. I decided to wait for the 1.4 patch to see if it would resolve the issue. I was glad to learn that the patch was now available and installed it right away. It didn't fix my current game, but that was to be expected, so I started a new game once again. It still didn't work.

It was painfull to do, but I deleted all my Skyrim save files and related data so there would be nothing that could compromise my new game. I didn't even waste time and settled for a random character, then as soon as I could, left Ralof behind and sprinted towards the nearest gold piece. It still didn't work.

I don't usually play videogames, but made an exception for Skyrim which I bought along with a new television and PS3 (after my wife's release day model broke while playing it. Not blaming Bethesda, because it was already on it's way out).
Is it too much to ask to be able to play and enjoy a game I paid good money for?

If anyone suffered from the same problem and found a solution they are willing to share, you would have all my gratitude.
If not, can I ask of Bethesda that this bug be included in the next update?

Thank you in advance.

Even though you can't help directly, thanks for the bump.

If you just open your inventory, and scroll down to misc, you will not see your gold. You have to either open a container, or select "what do you have for sale" from a shopkeeper before you can scroll down to misc. and see your gold. You went to a lot of trouble for nothing...It is not a bug, that's the way it works.

The amount of gold I possess can still be seen in the lower right corner of the main menu, but it isn't recognized by the shopkeepers or by the stewards. This means I can't buy houses, furniture, weapons, armors, potions, spell tomes...nothing at all. There is also the issue of the missing dialogue which may be even more of a problem.

lol. I have the same problem and started a topic on it. I hope you don't mind, I quoted some of your text. Maybe if we can get some attention on this... I named the topic -

Help with Gold not showing in inventory...

Hopefully we can get some answers as to what happened. It is not relegated to just a rare instance or on just a console either. A couple of PC gamers have had the same thing happen. So it is happening across all platforms, and to more and more people.

Anything to bring more attention to this problem is fine with me.

After some experimentation, my gold appeared when exchanging items with a follower. The thing is that it was highlighted in red and marked as stolen.
I tried giving him that money before earning some more legally, but it didn't fix the problem.

Do you also suffer from missing dialogue? In my case, both of these bugs started around the same time, so I am wondering if the two might be related.

The red items from a companion is a bug/glitch that seems to have always been in the game and still is after 1.4 though not as prolific now.

I have never heard of it happening with coins before but often armour and weapons taken from a companion would turn red as if stolen, also they would not show up in your inventory if you tried to sell them.

The way round it is to take all the dodgy items (in this case your coins) from your companion and place them in an empty container in your house (I always use breezehome) then tell you companion to “take all from the container” then you take all the items back from your companion which should then force them to lose their stolen status and you can proceed to sell or do what you want with them.

Give it a try as it might work with your coins.

As far as I know this doesn’t work for items that are really stolen.

Hope you manage to resolve the issue as it must be a real pain.

Finally had the time to start a new game so I could try your solution, but it wasn't even necessary since the problem didn't reoccur, except for the missing dialogue in the Companions guild and some minor quests.

Thanks for your help Schizoid Man. I hope others might benefit from it.

No probs.......keep it in mind just in case :brokencomputer: This still happens to me and is always resolved with the help of Janessa and the the first container on the left in my breezehome bedroom.

I tried this a few days ago. I placed my gold in my Breezehome chest, then told Lydia to take everything out of it. When I got it back from her, almost all my items were tagged as stolen. Even the dragon bones and scales. I mean,I was already storing items in it before I put the gold in there,so that could be why. But it still shouldn't spread to marking other items as stolen. Only 4 gold out of the 19,000 I had was actually stolen.

I had forgotten how annoying the horses are in this game. They shouldn't be joining fights under any circumstances. Also, why would bandits attack horses, don't they know how much they are worth?

From what I’m reading this seems to be happening more often now, particularly with coins which must be really annoying to say the least. I have never experienced this with anything other than weapons and armour (forsworn items generally), I don’t know if it makes any difference but I tend to store my items in categories ie. gems, jewellery, bones, armour, weapons etc all in different containers.

I'll have a little play around in my home tonight with my companion  and see if I can find anything else useful to try.

Update 28-2-12

Despite several attempts over 12 hours of play I have been unable to get any of my items to turn red/stolen so I guess it’s a random occurrence that perhaps requires a specific set of circumstances.

I didn’t test with stolen money as I have been reading that if it happens it can corrupt previous saves and then there’s no way out.

UPDATE -

"I had gone to the city where the guard asks you for money to enter and I noticed that I couldn't pay/bribe him." - That was Riften.

Well, I got a hold of a new hard drive, a Corsair Force Series GT (CSSD-F120GBGT-BK 2.5") 120GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) for about $170.

I installed the new drive and I didn't transfer anything over to it, if I need anything off of my old drive, I still have it if I need it.

1. I installed the game/game patch and started a new game. I can pay off guards if I do something wrong, I could pay the guard to get in to Riften, so this suggests that I now have the dialog options back involving NPC's and gold. I would assume that when I get enough money I will be able to buy houses etc. and I can't think of why not, according to these first NPC's dialog options, they know that I have gold now. After trying these to see if they worked I made a new character (I'm not going to pay that guard to get into Riften and I didn't want to start with a new character having assaults, lost gold, etc. Besides, my first character is almost always a "good" character anyway. My second character though, mwa ha ha haaa).

2. The game screens and stuff in the XMB load a little bit faster (that was expected) and the game does seem to run better. NOTE: I did not state that the graphics were actually different, just that it seemed to help with stuff like pop in and the game seems to be running more smoothly. Granted, I only have about four hours in on the new character so I don't know if it will help stutter/lag issues or not in the long run. But as of right now, the game runs excellent. I might wait for a bit before I get to far into it because I want to see what is in the next patch and I don't want to be continually deleteing or reinstalling or starting over.

When I started my new character,
1. I turned all autosave's off and disabled that last one
2. At the start of the game it will automatically create and save in the first slot (referred to as the "prisoner save").
3. I created manual saves in a new slots and use only those slots from that point on. (I know that if you save over the first slot, the prisoner save slot, then create a new character it will save the new character in the first slot automatically. Therefore "earasing" your "old" character.)

Just thought that this might help somebody in a similar situation.

edit - I have also posted this answer in another topic because I thought it pertained to both topics and could help in both instances.
