Bug: Unrelenting Force not working in fight?

Post » Sun May 20, 2012 5:27 am

Has anyone else encountered the Unrelenting Force (with all 3 words learned) not working at time when in a fight? I just got creamed by a frost troll and i kept hammering on the R2 with that shout equipped and it did nothing. This hasn't been the 1st time it has happened either. I was even holding R2 down so the shout would fully power up. Nothing. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem, or if it has been brought up.

Isn't that a "once per day" shout or whatever?

No its the shout where it knocks back enemies, It regenerates within a few minutes. But it just doesn't work at crucial times (like in a fight with a frost troll).

This happened to me while fighting a Frost Troll at Hag's End. Somehow my unrelenting force shout went straight through it with no effect.... then I was one-shotted by the same troll on Adept Difficulty.

Yeah I've had this happen to me before, its happened a couple of times actually, also with the Fire Breath shout. Sometimes they work sometimes they don't I guess. :|

Had that happen, too. The words will be heard, but nothing happens. No animations or effects. Just words.

Well, for me... I did see the ripple effect in the air as I made the shout. The troll just wasn't phased by it.

I understand that Ward spells can stop Unrelenting Force, but last time I checked, Trolls don't cast spells.

EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it. There was another occasion where I heard my character shout the words, but the actuall effects did not happen (not even the ripple effect). It was as if my Dragonborn powers were gone and he was making a fool of himself for even trying to use "Voice" powers. This was on a different save, at a different time.

I think this is more of a general shout bug, I've seen people report this problem with a number of different shouts.

There are some enemies that cancel your shouting ability.
When you look to the menu, you'll see grey shouts...
It's temporary.

I don't know about this "no shout effect", but Kyne's Peace failed some times for me (The effect happens, I can see the bear's aura and it still attacks me)...

What Lancifer is describing definitely sounds what i've experienced before. So, hopefully it's already been reported or others have experienced as well and will sound off.

I've had it happen a ton of times. Not just on that shout but on many of them. I think, at least for me, that it was primarily occurring when I was attempting to switch from ranged to melee weapons and then when I couldn't because it takes such an interminably long time to do so - panickingly hammering on the shout button to try and save my life - every single time it would not shout.

Once I realized that it is impossible to switch weapons fast enough I simply quit doing it. I primarily use a bow - on this character - I wanted a spellsword or an assassin type character that would be both ranged and melee with a few spells thrown in but that is impossible with the perk system. You don't get enough perks to vary the character at all. it's either ranged, melee, or magic. Try to split them up and you'll do all of them poorly. This would be my single biggest actual gameplay complaint. I don't know how many perk points you'd need to build a nice, well rounded character. Personally, I think simply doubling the amount of perks - 2 per level would be a fine solution. I don't see how this would be game breaking in any way. It takes you fourty levels just to get your basic perks. The game becomes unplayable past level 50 before your character is complete. *shrugs* I can't see how it would be possible with the perks the way they are to make a spellsword character. Now, on the positive side, it makes for a lot of replayability as you have to specialize, not customize very carefully. Two perks per level is too many? How about 1 for the first 35 levels and 2 for the next 35. That would give you two more trees and hardly be a game breaker. Sorry I got off topic. It's become a bit of a personal flaw lately. :)

I started a second character once I realized I mis-spent perk points and at lvl 44 was still 15 points short for what I needed at lvl 40. the point of this being - on my second character I went 100% bows. I carry a shield and a bound sword spell just in case but not once have I run into a situation where switching to it would've helped me. If I could switch without being hit 3-5 times by a single enemy could be achieved, then yes, it would have. That is not the case however. Now I simply take my beating while continuing to carefully fire arrows. It works. I've been in way over my head and have survived. Largely due to the shouts now working properly. They have not failed a single time. Point is - try not switching weapons or spells mid fight and see if you still have the issue. I'm betting you won't. Is it ideal? No, hardly - but at least it's a workaround for now. Hopefully, the atrocious weapon switching time will be addressed sometime soon.

quick update on this - I recently tried to shout without a weapon drawn and got the message " you cannot shout when you are unarmed" - that's new I believe, as I could swear I was always shouting in town by accident when I'd come back from the kitchen with a drink and pick the controller up the wrong way. However, it does confirm that during weapon swapping, shouting is unavailable and with the incredibly long time it takes to swap a weapon (on the ps3 at least), this means you are defenseless for some time if you do that and then try to shout. I tend to use it now before weapon swapping to give myself that breathing room. Now, if only it would cool off faster so you could do it again when switching back from healing to fighting...

It also seems as if enemies can 'stun' you - although not technically a 'disarm' - it does leave you unable to fight and your weapon disappears briefly - I have noticed during these moments that it is impossible to shout. Rather ironic, considering this is when you need it the most.

I've had a few delayed shouts. Basically in combat, try to shout (most noticeably Firebreath) and nothing happens. Keep trying, and FINALLY right when the combat ends the shout gets off. Not so useful.

I had experience this bug with other shouts as well, and if I try to do magic right after the failed shout. I get a message about "can't cast spells while shouting"

I had this problem too when i see a lot of bandits coming for me in a single file and I go "Now i'll get them MUAHAHAHAHA" and then "Holy SHHHIIIT it does not work RUN"!!!!. Its annoying. I also noticed that when in combat magika does not regenerate fast even though I have like regenerate magika up to 300% and when the fighting is done it regenerates almost instantly. Im like "so now you regenarate" and start blowing up bunnies!!!
