Bullet time (for cinematic finishers)

Post » Sat May 28, 2011 3:14 pm

I'd like it not just in finishers actaully.

People don't like it probably because it became famous with Matrix which was a modern thing, but I thing slow-mo is plain artistic if not overused...Personal opinion.

I don't know about others, but in my case, the problem is that I am enjoying a game and suddenly I need to wait untill the slow animation is finished. Could be worse, but it's not something enjoyable.

Ugh, the word immersion is thrown around on these forums too much. How does slashing a dude's throat in slo-mo break "immersion" for you?

I would like it on the last enemy of a fight. Prevents it from getting old quick.

When time slows down for no reason other than to try to make something look cool, it's not very immersive. It makes me feel like I'm in some film student's lame project.

Wait, so there are cinematic finishers? =/ I hope it's possible to get rid of them, because it'll probably get tedious after a while (I turned off the real-time VATS thing in New Vegas because of this).

Well it could be just a two second slow mo that emphasises the killing blow, and then the rest of the move (the enemy crumpling to the ground or the parries before the killing blow) plays at normal speed

3-26 - yeah they were one of the first things to be confirmed. Mentioned in the GI cover story and probably the GI website story on combat.

Yes please. This would be great. Just like in Fable.

That's a reason not to put it in; nothing should be like Fable.

Well what do you mean by cinematic? There are special finishing moves for each weapon, that will presumably be performed in first person.

I just find the whole immersion concept unfounded and varying from person to person. Of all the things that could "break the immersion", I think the most prevalent would be your immediate surroundings and the fact that you have a controller in your hands(or a keyboard).

This is what I was thinking about. This kind of things are OK for movies, but in the case of games is a question of tastes. Obviously you would enjoy while in my case it would be a little anoyance (In Oblivion's 'deadly reflex' mod, its implemented and I won't uninstall that mod only for this, but don't like it).

What if you fight in 3rd person? I usually do. It would annoy me if it switched to 1st person for a finishing move. I'd rather have a 3 second slo-mo move in 3rd person.

Right... and the point of immersion is to persuade you to forget that you're holding a controller or in front of a computer.

Phoss: Ah right, it would just show the animation in whatever perspective you're using. Forgot that people actually play in third person, lal

I'm not denying a fact that when I'm playing a game, my mind is in that world. But if a slo-mo finisher were implemented, I wouldn't stop being in that world and look around my room.

I disagree fully.

I find it very immersion-breaking if I'm in a tough fight, and just as I'm about to kill the enemy - I suddenly switch to a movie-like camera-mode view where time is slowed and you see the enemy die.
To force the player to change from the point of view (3rd/1st person) into a movie-like camera-mode view, while slowing the time; is very very immersive-breaking to me.

Because of what I stated I above, I simply hate it. On top of that, I find it unrealistic (it's pretty obvious why it's completely and utterly unrealistic).

It's just that slow motion is a very "video-gamey" effect. Well, originally a cinematography thing.

Not really sure what bullet time mean. Could anyone explain it?
Edit: Judging from other comments, I think it means slow-motion.

Now... I have two things I would NEVER EVER want to see with finishing attacks:

- I DON'T want to finishing moves to go in slow-motion.

- I DON'T want finishing moves to force you into some kind of third-person view (something like V.A.T.S for instance).

As long as finishing attacks don't have what I stated above, I'm fine.
If not, I'm not buying the game until there is a mod that removes it. I find it that terrible.

Judging from the screenshots, both are likely to happen though @_@

What, you mean time doesn't stop when you kill someone in a bar fight on a Saturday night?

When did I ever say anything about third person? I love first person. This is about slow motion. That can happen in first person. Just fiddle around with the killcam settings in NV.

Yeah I don't want my point of view or time to change just because I'm killing someone. Utterly despise it :P
Even if this thread supposedly is only about slow-motion (if that's what you're saying); I wanted to mention it anyway since I find it very related to finishers.

Well, the camera is always on the side of the one dieing. And the blood effects seem so slow-mo ish, with little particles flying so correct...

Just my judgement anyway

I think I saw two...But even in that one,it doesn't seem like free camera

Well,it's not that I really care how it is,just telling my opinion...If you'd ask me,finishing moves are stupid (or let's say unnecessary) from the beginning...
