Bunny Invasion in My Yard

Post » Sat May 18, 2013 7:27 am

Recently, my yard has become a favorite among wild bunnies. This would be cute, if this hasn't been going on since last month. I would just assume these were bunny bullies who found a good place to torment my dog, but it turns out they are bunnies giving birth to babies under the deck of the porch.

Me and my mom let an orphaned baby bunny live there since it needed a safe place and probably had already been living under the deck before it got lost in the garage. I'll stop with the personifying of the bunnies since it might make me seem loony, but I just know that thing went up to some bunnies after leaving(if it lived), curled up its nose, and made sounds meaning, "Hey, these humans got a nice place to live. Check it out. It's free, the humans have been protecting me, and they even got fence posts to hide under."

Little snitch. So yeah. There bunnies giving birth under a porch and now I'm contemplating finding out when rabbit hunting season is just so I can tell the bunnies to get off my lawn! There was about four bunnies https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ui3TeqM1K28 in the yard yesterday and there has been one that lived with the baby before it left. That one is now sitting above a burrow near a fence post.

The other four are recent little invaders.

Yeah, I made this thread to talk about being invaded by bunnies, but I'm sure someone actually has had an animal invasion at one point. Even if it is roaches, share it.

Rabbits are an enormous problem here in Australia, destroying much of the ecosystem and sending http://www.ehp.qld.gov.au/wildlife/images/bilby.jpg extinct. Cane toads have invaded most of Queensland, including the backyard.

DAWWWW...they are so cute. Why would you want to kill them? I wish my yard would get bunnies. I like bunnies.

Also, why did I click on that link?

It reminds me of the campus of the university of Victoria, in Canada. When I studied there (in 2009-2010), there were hundreds of bunnies everywhere on campus. It was cute, but the grass was very dirty. I wonder if they got rid of them.

The problem with rabbits is that they breed like rabbits. Though they have plenty of predators in these parts, what with foxes roaming the streets in the early hours sounding like they're goblins.

We haven't had any real problems with marauding rabbits, though we do get the occasional plague of moles, and deer wander into our street from the neighbouring woods and eat people's flowers.

I recommend heavy explosives. Or poison. Or bear traps. Or machine guns.

Rabbits are pests that'll take over if you dont deal with them.

Don't use poison. You'll want to be able to eat them after you killed them, rabbit is delicious.

I'm against torturing the poor things. besides, my dog likes to eat the weeds out of the garden, so using poison on the garden the baby was eating in and being told by my mom not to eat in would be a bad idea. That yard is also my dog's territory, so she's not very happy about this situation. My mom's using vinegar as an animal safe kind of weedkiller soon, probably.

My parents are planning to make the deck bunny proof when they leave. I don't really plan to kill them since I would feel bad about it.

I couldn't resist linking to that hilarious song from Birdemic. I love the song. If you want the bunnies, take them.

If you have more than one Bunny in your yard, your going to soon have dozens of bunnies.

Hopefully you can teach your dog to chase them and harass them so they find a new place to live.

OP: Have you thought about falconry?

Depending on where you live, you may or may not need to wait for hunting season due to it being a nuisance pest. Check you local Department of Natural Resources or equivilant agency. It could also depend on municipal restrictions (i.e. no rifle hunting, no TNT, no Tazmanian Devils...) However, if you're planning on teasing the wee critters about wabbit season, I'll direct you to Elmer or Daffy, with Rabbit-fire being my favorite

If they start getting at your plants, try a rotten egg based mixture on your plants. We use Liquid Fence, but it's expensive.

Trapping is an option, and there are trapper associations around that could help you.

Food...and you must not be a property owner? We have one or two that come through...we do love them

IN lieu of this, various stores sell fox or coyote urine or scent to help keep critters away. Of course, I wonder if it'd bring in said critters...better make sure your dog is in shape!

 but you should add bit of fat to it. Also, there's the poison in the food chain aspect.

Which brings the age old question, would you rather your yard was full of rabbits or smelt like fox piss? :P

I am a property owner. All I get though are ground hogs. I hate them. Digging holes in my yard, hiding under my deck.

Ground hogs are not cute. They are ugly fat lazy weirdos who loaf around all day and contribute nothing to society except for holes you fall into. Bunnies on the other hand contribute cuteness, more bunnies, cuteness and meat.

Get a rifle, and blow them to pieces. (That's how we handle things in Northern Ontario)

If it wasn't for the Groundhog we wouldn't have 'Groundhog Day'.

Ground hogs aren't that bad, either. Harder to skin than rabbits, but they do taste good; roasted with chicken stock, potatoes, carrots, celery, and season salt/spices....

We have a bunch of rabbits in my neighborhood, although I have noticed that I see them a lot less often these days. That might also have to do with me having two dogs now. I've also seen a fox carrying away a bunny corpse so maybe nature just did its thing to even out their population.
