Burnt/Crisp textures?

Post » Tue Feb 01, 2011 1:27 am

Is there anything about bodies having burnt textures if they're sparked into flames? I really hated how Fallout 3 didn't have Burnt corpses after you set them into 1000Degress of heat...It really ruined the flamer experience for me tbh :l

I hope they fix it on New Vegas, because as far as I saw in any of the previews, it's really still the same D:

it′s more a limitation of the engine I guess, maybe it simply can′t handle changing textures, is this case I would say it′s more likely that if they improve how NPC handle fire, at least I hope they actually make them run around in terror.

still I doubt they left out burning skins becuase they can, if it′s not in the game then there is a reason, anyway once the game been out a while the above moder will most likly make a NV version.

It IS quite clearly possible, since mods have been able to do it, in fact, even the Oblivion version of the engine could allow this to happen with the proper scripting, so I don't see why Obsidian couldn't, especially since they can likely change aspects of the game that modders can't, since they're developing it.

I would like to see this, as it always seemed kind of silly to me that people who were burned to death by a flamethrower looked like they could ave just been poisoned for all the visible damage they show, while this problem certainly isn't limited to Fallout 3, it feels more out of place here than it did in Oblivion since in Fallout 3, the bodies of enemies can be dismembered, it just feels weird when people killed by a gun or melee weapon could lose their limbs while people killed by fire don't show a single burn on their bodies. Also, I think I recall that in Fallout 3, fire would cause enemies to bleed, they should really change that in New Vegas. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any sign to indicate that this has happened, though if it's not in New Vegas maybe it can be in a later game.

If they're going to start not adding things on the basis that modders will add them, then they might as well just release the "game" with the gameplay mechanics and engine finished, but just an empty wasteland for the world and leave it up to modders to create content for it.

Censorship?

Mebbe crispy bits make the game too graphic for Walmart to sell it?

Maybe they didn't think of this feature? It's the most sensible explanation for the lack of Burnification in Beth's games

Maybe it would bug out and slap the textures on someone who got burned but is still alive.

The engine definitely supports some forms of burning, but we should be careful to distinguish actual changes to the textures (doesn't happen) with layering of new textures and affects overtop of existing textures (happens). Good example of this from the New Vegas previews is the guy puking on the wall outside of Lucky 38 casino; we get a glimpse of him loosing it and a nice yellow/green vomit stain adorning the wall and floor where he lost his cookies. Its the same concept with burning - when something is supposed to burn-up, the main texture of the object/model/NPC is still there afterwards, but a new "burnt" texture is layered on top of it to make it look more burnt.

I should also note that this is not the Only way to do it, but how I have seen it done in Fallout3 and the GECK. There are a number of ways in which the burnt texture can be "activated", either via Texture Set on an existing or another model (most simple) or by acutally putting a new "burnt" texture down exactly where the fire was (harder). SkyKappa did something similar with his SprayPaint mod - which utilized the same techniques.

So while it's definitely possible to make stuff looked "burnt" in Fallout3, Its not as elegant as one might suspect where the actual texture is changed. Its more about layering, which makes the job harder/more complex for the level designer in terms of setting up the texture sets, the scripting, testing the effects, etc. Definitely doable, but not in the natural form as the poster was hoping for.

Well, it's still fine to have something similar/identical, rather than not having any at all, right?

I think you can talk about the crispy bits in the http://www.gamesas.com/index.php?/topic/1111227-what-do-you-want-in-new-vegas/ topic please.
