Butter churn

Post » Fri Nov 16, 2012 2:29 pm

So, I built the kitchen so my vampire can bake pies, but my butter churn doesn't want to activate. It worked once, and now it doesn't seem to show up when I try to use it (meaning I can see it, but can't activate it). I'm still upgrading the kitchen (I have to get some large antlers for my elk's head) and the house itself is still under construction. Just wondering if this is common, something I'm missing, or just too early to say. As always, thanks for your help.

Unfortunately that is the way it is, you get 1 butter. I griped about this once in another thread, if you have milk you should be able to milk the darn cow and make butter. But, if it respawns, which I don't know, it takes too much time for a house that you're always in and out of. I just buy it at stores, inns, etc.

Ah. I see. I guess I'm residually spoiled from the Millstone Farm mod from Oblivion where you had to milk the cow and churn the butter, etc. I guess it's better than a bug. Thank for the tip!

You have to be away from the house for 10 days before the churn (and anything else inside the house) resets.

Well, properly, the churn should work any time you have milk with you. But bugs do seem to happen.

Well I doubt this is a bug.

What it does is makes butter quite rare. I now make it a point to stop at every inn I come across in my travels, check to see if the inkeeper has butter for sale, and then buy out the entire stock, which is usually only a couple at a time.

Your fruit and vegie sellers are probably your best source, but yes, you will have to do the shop rounds a bit if you want enough butter to cook up some treats. You take the butter on the table in the kitchen, you get two butters each time the house resets.

They have to make us work a bit to get those treats, the milk and flour are pretty easy to get.

My Level 26 Nord warrior I just got out again doesn't care that Alduin is rauaging the war, he just hunts for butter and milk! For some reason, in my game butter is actually pretty common. I'd say about every other food/general store merchant has a couple butters in stock. Milk however....

You do not have a kitchen wing with a cow handy? My one kitchen wing provides more than enough milk, for ALL the houses. There is also a fair bit of milk on display in the kitchen and one in the main hall that you can gather up and store and wait for the house to reset if you are going adventuring for a while.

I have a cow and a kitchen, but I have yet to find it. I've looked everywhere. >:(
But yeah, I hunted all over my house for anything of use. So far nothing, but I haven't done much in the cellar yet....

You lost an entire kitchen? Milk is in the cupboard at the same end of the kitchen as the butter churn. I jug a day, cupboard holds a weeks worth of milk, so you have to remove it when it gets to seven or your cow goes on strike.

Did you build all 3 large cupboards? Milk will only appear in the the one in the one in the right end of the kitchen (as you look in), across from the table with the honey and next to the butter churn. If you don't have that cupboard, no milk.

Surely you don't mean your whole kitchen wing is missing? I hope not!

It is not a bug. All Organic Containers (those that respawn) have the same respawn timer on them. Not sure if you can set a different respawn time on a container. Note, the generic term Organic was started in Morrowind to denote plants (which are containers) that respawn.

The butter churn is a 'flora', as I found out when making my kitchens for Hearthfire. It acts just like the plants and spawns an ingrediant ever so often. It is set to respawn and has no scripts on i, so it probably respawns at the same rate as the plants that are not part of Hearthfire.

Ah, so that's why. I was wondering why the churn didn't "open" like any other container would. Presumably, the mead barrels in the cellar are also flora.

Stupid design choice. Should have done both the butter churn and the mead barrels just like they did the milk cupboard: a proper container scripted to spawn 1 butter and 1 mead every 24 hours.

I'd be swimming in mead if they did! LOL I had some empty spots that were seriously annoying me where I didn't like some furniture pieces, so to 'fill in the blanks', I got some of those big cooking kettles and placed them where I wanted, and filled them with mead, ale, different wines, etc. Looks good and you can grab a drink almost everywhere in my house. I thought about the cellar, then decided to build the mead barrels. I like them!

I think the devs should have thought just a bit more on the whole cow, milk, butter thing though.

It just doesn't seem as though they communicated. For example, it's hard for me to believe that the same person who set up the cow/milk/cupboard mechanic is the same person who decided that the butter churn and mead barrels ought to be set up as "flora." I mean, they didn't even set up the flora as flora. The planters actually replenish ingredients at regular intervals irrespective of whether or not the player happens to revisit the cell.

Would have been nice if we could have also got an egg and a butter each day as well, all those chickens and hardly any eggs. :(

Just as well we cannot have a full roast chicken on the table, or some of those chickens would be for the oven being such lousy layers, they respawn with the house anyway.

According to http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Butter you can buy butter from these inn keepers (doesn't seem very many does it?)
  • Mralki at Frostfruit Inn located in Rorikstead
  • Jonna at Moorside Inn located in Morthal
  • Eydis at Old Hroldan Inn located in The Reach
??My butter churn hasn't given me any butter after the first time either. It's frustrating to get so much milk and so little butter and honey (and so few eggs).

You can buy butter from any innkeeper or food seller, even general traders sometimes have butter. Just depends on if your going to be lucky as to whether or not they have any.

Edit
And there is nothing special about those three traders anyway, they do not have butter all the time, so are no more reliable a source of butter than any other trader.

While on your travels, just check every inn and food vendor and buy it when they have it. I have a decent stock now, but still check when I can. I also raid chicken coops and nests wherever I go. lol
