The horse, and the cow and chickens, are just there to give the place a lived in look. Personally I like it. I never ride but I still bought one.

Well one character has it easy, and one had it challenging the first time, that same character on replaying is definitely having a battle to keep the livestock alive. He lost none the first time, never had to reload to save anything. This time he has managed to lose the lot at different times. He is learning though, but I would think if two legendary dragons ever turned up there would be no way to save them.

I don't really mean to make fun of you but you would actually reload if some of your livestock died? There must be some secret usefulness to them I have yet yo figure :D

Well if I let them die, I failed to protect them, or at least that is how I look at it, and like lots of others I really like having those chickens there, would have a lot more if we could, and the horse is nice to look at. Due to several glitches I ended up doing it all again anyway, this time Lakeview has no livestock till I see how hard it is going to be to keep them alive. So far it looks like the third time is the best, Braggen does not get a dragon every visit, nor does he get a horde of enemies invading the place. Probably they are just waiting for some livestock to kill.

So for once Shadowmere got the stable all to herself and is happy to stay there.

They SHOULD let you hire respawnable guards or something to help with that. Heck, hire an unkillable companion.

Would be better if it was unlockables! Like when you're the Thane of the individual holds, you can petition the reigning Jarl for 2-3 soldiers. Or depending on your progress in the civil war, you can petition Gen Tulius or Ulfric for soldiers. If none of that applies to you, then you can hire thugs or mercenaries from Riverwood.

If you have the kitchen wing and you purchase the cow, one of the cupboards in the kitchen will spawn 7 jugs of milk and then one jug per day after that.
