Can't adopt Sofie

Post » Sat Nov 17, 2012 2:53 am

So I wanted to adopt Sofie, the flower-seller in Windhelm, because I felt so awful about leaving her cold and homeless. I went and created child's bedrooms in both Breezehome and Proudspire, but when I talk to Sofie about adoption, I only get the "I have a house, but no room for you" option. What am I doing wrong? There is no other furniture option from Falk/Proventus. Is there a step I've missed?

Thank you in advance :)

Did you only just download the DLC or have you been playing it a while. PC or Xbox 360? If PC it could be a mod or the unofficial patch causing the problem. If the game has wandered off and lost the plot, maybe building a house will remind it you do own other suitable housing for children.

And on the subject of bugs, did you check that you actually got the upgrade for each home?

Thanks for the reply :) I'm on PC, yes lots of mods, but I do try and keep them very well regimented. I checked to make sure the rooms had been altered in each house. I guess I was just wondering if this was a common bug but I guess not. I'll try and build a house from scratch and see how that works.

I think most of us would have gone and built a house and adopted before modify the current houses. So it could be an obvious bug that most of us missed, or a bug common to the PC because of a mod conflicting with the DLC.

Another important question. Have you killed the old hag in charge of Honorhall Orphanage yet? Adoption doesn't become an option until you do. Or atleast it hasn't for me.

I don't know if the old hag has anything to do with being able to adopt children outside of Honorhall. I didn't know you could adopt outside the hall so I killed her and her assistant let me adopt Runa. I then found Sofia in Windhelm and adopted her. I have yet to try it the other way around with another character. But maybe the adoption option just isn't available at all until the old bag is killed and you complete that segment into the Dark Brotherhood.

Its kind of a shame the Dark Brotherhood storyline is forced on you if you want to adopt.

Depends on your veiw of 'forced'. Idiot assassin kidnaps my Freya and tells her she's not getting out unless some one dies, then that assassin ends up torn into thin red ribbons and consumed. You don't HAVE to join them. And even IF you do, you don't have to do another lick of work for them unless you choose to do so. I just like to think of it as protecting some orphans from a disguised hag raven.

You only have to kill Grelod if you want to adopt from the orphanage, there are plenty of orphans with no home you can adopt without murdering anyone.

Yes, actually, it does. The only adoptions you can't do are those in the orphanage until the old hag is dead.

@Circe:
Make sure you have the dresser (chest) built in the child's bedroom. It's the one which appears between the two beds. Check to see if it exists. If it does not, build it. This will open the dialogue. If the dresser (chest) already exists, then I concur there's a glitch. Since you're on a PC, that's about all the advice I can offer.

You do not get a choice of furniture when upgrading the existing houses, Circe has upgraded Breezehome and Proudspire, so it is definitely a bug, just waiting to see of which variety. Probably it is a mod conflict, you should not need to build a house to adopt.

Thanks so much everyone for the help and replies. It will take me a little time to get a house built, so I won't be able to see if it works until then. I certainly have no option from the Jarls' stewards to build chests in the child's bedrooms of the existing houses; I went back and checked. Strange that this glitch never came up before. I guess most people build houses before they adopt! (Forgot to add that I'm not married either, but google seems to tell me that won't affect adoption.)

I'll check back in to update whether building your own house fixes this bug. Either way it seems like it's something that might need to be addressed in a patch.

Thanks again!

Not sure if anyone's still interested in this, but I did say I'd update after building my own house, so here you go. I built Lakeview and tried adopting again, trying out different stages to see what worked. Strangely enough, I could not adopt with just one child's bed + chest built - even though I was only trying to adopt one child. It was only after two beds and chests had been built that I finally got the "Yes, I have a manor near Falkreath" option in the adoption dialogue tree. Just thought it might be interesting for other people to know. I have no mods that alter houses or NPC dialogue, so I'm pretty sure it's a vanilla issue, although I'm happy top be disproved if anyone has a different experience.

You have to have the room ready for children, so ready for two is expected. Can you now move her to Proudspire Manor or Breezehome, or is the game still refusing to recognise those homes were upgraded.
