Personally I view that as a feature. I wouldn't want to be trying to hit the favorites key in a critical situation where I have very little time to do what I need to do, and accidentally open, then immediately re-close the window before making my selection, because I had mistakenly hit the q button (or whatever it's mapped to for you) a second time.
I have, personally, no problem with using the tab key to close it. As the other poster said, it's UI consistency, which is actually good in UI design - minimizing surprises for people (although, obviously you were surprised, so you can't ever completely remove surprises), and it means I can never accidentally close it when I'm just trying to open it.
