can't drop items, can't favourite items, can't access favour

Post » Mon May 14, 2012 5:39 am

my list of bugs -
can't drop items, pressing R with an item highlighted does nothing.
Can't favourite items, pressing F with an item highlighted does nothing
can't access favourites menu, pressing Q does nothing
Screen freezes randomly in exteriors and interiors, for intervals of 2 to 10 seconds, even during the beginning cinematic.

I'm running on XP, with this rig -

Intel Core 2 Duo CPU
3 gig of RAM
NVIDIA Geforce 9800 GT

anyone with any ideas or similar problems? This is my first proper pc game and tbh I honestly wish I would have brought it for console now. What I thought would be a fun night of gaming that I've been anticipating for literally years, has turned into a absolute buzz kill. Its 3 am and I am ready to literally eat my disk.

I don't know man... lots of crazy things have been happening to pirated copies. (I'm not saying you are doing that. But if you are that's the problem.) Your gpu is on the low side. Perhaps that's the issue. Recommended specs also say win 7, but I don't know how big of an issue that'd be. I'm about to go get my copy. So I don't really know how to help out more until I test it on my own rig.

Good luck!

How fast is your CPU? To me it sounds like your CPU isn't cutting it. Also, I don't think the game was made for WinXP.

it is a completely legitimate copy, I even cycled like four miles to the midnight release.

Anyway, I've just figured out that all the menu related bugs are from me remapping the keys - the draw weapon key basically has to stay as R. But the favourites not working I can't quite figure out, but it works upon resetting the controls to default so it must be because of that.

As for the screen freezing problem, yeah perhaps it is my old cpu or xp, or my gpu, but thern again there are a few others with this problem on the forum too so I think it could be an actual bug and not just my computer.

Also, It just did the same freeze thing again during a loading menu (the steam/smoke froze), just to put that out there.

If I can't get this sorted I'm going straight back and buying the xbox version tomorrow, I knew pc gaming was too frigging complex

I've noticed a few control anomalies as well, which is a problem since I tend to remap controls pretty extensively.

For example, if I leave activate as the default "E", it works as advertised. But when I remap it to my mouse's first thumb-button, it works fine for activate, BUT if I activate a book to read it, it won't work to take the book, nor will E (or any other key - believe me, I've tried 'em all!).
So basically, when I want to take a book, I'd have to remap Activate back to E, hit E to read, then hit E to take.
For now, I've just stuck with leaving activate set to E, which is a mega pain in the butt since I'm so used to clicking that mouse button in every other game.

I also can't seem to get Favorites working (and btw, why is there no "u" in that? I live in Ireland, we use UK english, which spells it favourite... poor localisation, perhaps?)
Maybe if I reset everything back to default, it might work. Next time I come across a book, I'll try that and report back.

Another annoyance - I always remap quicksave/load to f11/f12, but I cant do that here - f12 is 'reserved' for some reason, but I can't see what for - it doesn't seem to do anything when I hit it in game.

I've had a root around to find an INI with the control mappings to see if I can resolve it with a bit of judicious text-editing, but I'll be buggered if I can find the controls. Maybe stored in the save file?

Having said that, I'm about 2 hours into the game, and I'm really enjoying it. It looks gorgeous, and I reckon I'm going to sink a few years into it, between playing and modding. Happy days! :brokencomputer:

^ try restoring the control defaults, and favourites should work fine. It svcks because I am left handed, so I play with a completely custom keyboard set up, dunno what to do now really.

@Tiris - yeah, I can see that being left handed, you'd need to remap practically everything. svcks to be forced to learn a whole new control-layout because of buggy remapping. I'm guessing it'll be fixed in a patch pretty soon though, as I imagine it'll piss off a lot of people.

Edit:
Dunno what the story is with your freezing problem, though. It runs smoothly for me at high settings, with my Dell XPS 710, NVidia GTX 260, Vista. I'm planning on slowly raising the grafix setting to find the sweet spot, but it's fine so far, no freezes, no stutter during a 2 1/2 hour session, playing as far as Riverwood. Not sure how representative that is of the game as a whole.
