Can't enjoy the game

Post » Fri May 11, 2012 12:35 am

Well, the first two days I was playing Skyrim were probably the best, I was playing in ecstasy, I fell in love with the game immediately...But now, I somehow screwed up the fun for me, and I'm struggling to get it back. My character didn't develop like I'd like it to, I was going for a stealthy archer assassin with daggers and some magic, which exactly leads me to my problem, I wanted to do everything with it, which doesn't work.

Now I'm struggling with the idea to just make a new character and dump my ~20 hours of gameplay and the character along with it, which sorta breaks my heart.

I'd just like to have fun with this game again, because it's obviously amazing. I just don't know what to do anymore...

When I make a new character, I already struggle with the choice of gender. I think to myself "Hm, I like roleplaying a female char" but on the other hand I'd like a male character, too, but I dislike the idea of having a muscled brute on my screen all day, you know where I'm getting at. Second: What kind of character is it going to be ? This plus all kinds of stuff I need to think about instead of enjoying the game...

Someone please help me. :(

You could:
A. Continue with your character and focus on leveling up fewer things (example- stop using magic). Your character will become stronger in your other play styles over time.

B. There is 200-300 hours worth of gaming in Skyrim. You don't have to do it all with one character. I am playing the main quest and Fighters guild quests as a Nord who also does black smithing. This should take me 30-40 hours of gaming. Once I have completed those I will restart the game as a pure mage and ignore the main quest but focus on college of winterhold and really get into alchemy. Maybe 20 hours of gaming. The third time through I will try to kill everyone in the Dark Brotherhood... just to have fun.. and find anything in Skyrim I have missed on previous plays. 100-200 hours of gaming. By then Bethesda should be releasing a DLC.

I tried option A a few times, but somehow I just can't enjoy it anymore, since I always make up stuff in my head and have doubts on it.

Option B is what I wanted to do roughly, but the first playthrough is the most important one you know.

I like the jack-of-all-trades style character. As a result I have a sneaky/magey/assassin who does well in just about any time of combat at lvl 19. While I do still occasionally get my butt handed to me I definitely end up walking away from the fight more often than the other guy.

Initial perk points are often more useful than subsequent ones so I don't mind having a bonus in my light and heavy armor and I've beefed enchanting a bit, destruction magic, sneak, bow, 1 handers. It's all good and I'm loving it! If I was in front of my 360 I'd put up my build but alas I cannot.

Yes, the best advice would be: Take your time with it.

Stay with your original character and keep on developing his/her abilities in the stealth/assassin field. Play the game for what it is, immerse yourself in the storyline / side quests, and put effort into decorating your house with trinkets you find / steal on your travels.

They call your ailment re-roll syndrome. I bet you got into the habit of doing that with MMO's. This is a different kettle of fish my friend, just play, and never ever Fast Travel :)

I don't play MMO, and I rarely fast travel. I've never had a re-roll syndrom before in any TES ... this is why I'm asking.

I was planning on going Archery only, but with the Dragons and so many things swarming you, it's really necessarily to have some type of melee combo.

I went with Shield/Dagger, and have to switch in and out as needed.

.If the question isn't about combat - and I didn't really see a question in any of that - then I can't help you.

Maybe take it back and try MW3.

I had the similar problem. My stealthy character was awesome for in-dungeon and confined spaces. But in the wild, I continually got killed by big nasty creatures (trolls, sabre cats, etc) because I dont have the patience to sneak across the wilderness.

I rerolled to a mage, I have more fun playing mage types than stealth types anyway.

The opening sequence is awesome, so dont hesitate to replay if you get bored of your character.

I wanted to do everything with it, which doesn't work.

If you want to do everything, then you need to make more than one character.

So, play our your current character and achieve what you want with them, or retire them and roll a new one. However, you are not going to be able to build a Jack of Trades character in this game, and you really shouldn't. You don't need to do all the quests with each character. One can do nothing but town quests, one can do the Main Quest, another does a faction or two. Build a character for each facet of the game, that can be more fun in the long run.

Thanks for the advice CCNA, I'll try going on with my current character and see if I can score something in the Dark Brotherhood. Thing is, many aspects of the game are really fun, so I tried everything out a bit, just totally got me out of rhythm with that.

Sounds like you're really not enjoying the game and should probably take it back. As you already know, these games are all about the character that you create. If you're constantly miserable because you can't decide what to do, then my advice would be to try a more linear game with far less choice.

Should you decide to stick with it, I'd say just stop using magic or archery so you become adept at only a handful of skills. Otherwise you will end up being an average adventurer that will seriously struggle later on in the game.

I never finish the first play-though in these games. I usually start as a straightforward warrior, to learn the ropes. I kill a bunch of stuff and, in the meantime, I see a lot of magic going on. Then I start itching for that magic so I start to think about the kind of mage I want to role play. At some point, it just gets boring to keep slashing through everything so I start the mage. I have a ton of fun but then, I start to think about how awesome it would be to be a stealthy assassin... lurking in the shadows, killing things with an arrows to the head without making a sound, maybe some magic to become invisible and be the ultimate assassin. So eventually, I stop playing my mage and start my assassin.

And so on and so forth... I think I only went through the whole story in Oblivion, with the 4th character or so. The same thing happened with Dragon Age games and other RPGs...

So I don't get you.

I know, I know, not helpful

This. My assassin only does stealthy quest and turns down anything that isn't stealthy. It makes the game more fun and it makes it replayable.

I would encourage patience. As I have said, I have a stealth esque character who has dabble in a number of things and is still very functional and quite enjoyable but I have to take things slow and I don't mind reloading a fight. If I walk in and pull the guy I see and suddenly get swarmed by a bunch of guys I didn't see, I take it as a lesson, reload and make a better approach. I'm loving my guy. I can pick a lock, make a sneaky backstab, raise some undead, light someone on fire and then go toe-to-toe with whoever is left!

This!!

No one character should do it all.
The game was just released and I already have 4 (well, 3 actually...Edgtho died this morning)

Base types, though not locked in to hamper oneself:
1. A Male Nord Scout/Tracker who lives off the land and doesn't do a single major quest. Simply roleplaying as a bystander in the province, occasionally helping a local.
2. A Female Breton Healer, working her way around the Holds, making her own charts of ingredient locales.
3. A Female Redguard Vindictor. This lass has a chip the size of Ysgramir on her shoulder. She's working the main storyline with nary a minute to stop and take names.
4. An old Male Nord Fisherman, retired and recently deceased. I don't want to talk about it.

It's YOUR game, so play it as you choose. To limit oneself is self-defeating, as is having one character do everything.
Sparse out the duties and interests and you'll always have a character ready to suit your current mood.

Hope that helps.

I hear ya. I have played dozens of custom classes in Oblivion and was torn for days on what to do in Skyrim. I decided to focus on the story line with the first character and make one that will be fairly easy to build up and run down the road. Here is the build, melee-focused. Remember, you only have 50 skills points before they start getting really hard to earn. That means any more than 4 or 5 skills with perks and your character will start to loose focus/power. Specialized is best.

Orc, Female (for the power, races will end up being meaningless so just pick based on the power you get)

One-handed, going dual and strikes/stances, probably focus on swords
Heavy Armor, going well fit, matching to get reflect blows
Smithing, going arcane & heavy
Archery, overdrawn & crit shots
Restoration, some masteries, regen, respite, recovery, and avoid death
Sneak, just to get 3x with bow, which mean stealth, backstab to get aim, maybe muffle

Despite what they say, I don't think this is a "play how you want" kind of game. You'll need some focus to be viable at the end. I think they meant play as you want *within a certain play style* (i.e., warrior, mage, thief)

Some people don't seem to understand me. :) I love Elder Scrolls games, playing since Daggerfall and loved the freedom of it, that's the essential thing in Elder Scrolls games. It's just that I somehow ruined -something- I don't really know yet, that's keeping me from having fun. I know, sounds spacey, and hell it is!

Maybe I'm just a little irritated by the fact that there's no classes anymore, maybe I needed that kind of restriction. Hell, I don't know. I just need a bit help about how to approach the game from now. Should I continue with the character I'm kind of not fond with, or go for something else ? If yes, what ?
