Can't equip weapons anymore...

Post » Fri Dec 10, 2010 2:41 am

Ok, so I dealt with most of the bugs FNV had thrown at me, but after about 14 hours of playtime I've run into a bug I can't get around. Now, whenever I attempt to equip a weapon, it immediately unequips (as if there was a script removing the equipped weapon). I even hear the equip sound, then the unequip sound as soon as I leave Pip-Boy.

I figured it was a mod or bugged save file, so I tried reverting to earlier saves and tried loading with all my mods removed. No dice. Even saves way before the issue cropped up have the bug. Switching to a different weapon or unequipping/reequipping = no weapon equipped. After checking online everywhere for someone who found a solution I haven't even run into anyone who has this issue...

So I tried starting a new game (with no mods installed). I finally got to the point where you have a Pip-Boy again and found that the issue was still there... So it's not a script issue with a save file, but something wrong with my game.

So I tried uninstalling and reinstalling. No dice.

A game that worked ok (with the occasional bug) now is (unless I want to play an unarmed fighter) unplayable. WTF? All I can think of is that it's something caused by the patch... But if so, wouldn't someone else have posted about the same problem? I mean, it's 100% reproducible with new games, all my saves, fresh installs, etc....

I'm in the midst of uninstalling/reinstalling for the 3rd time (this time with auto updates turned off in steam).... Has anyone else seen this problem?

I'm at work so this is off the top of my head. I'm not sure, but I think the saves are kept somewhere within the "my documents" folder, along with other files. When you uninstall make sure to delete(or rename just for testing purposes) other folders containing any fallout files. Then reinstall and see if that changes anything.

Thanks, but I tried that. Killed the folder in my documents, made sure the steam folder was fully deleted, restarted steam, etc (had to remap my keys after reinstall). Still can't understand why a script bug in a save file would affect a new game played on a fresh install...

Well, I was thinking that there were other files with the save files in the my documents. This is indeed strange...

Yhea, I had the same thought.... It's why I uninstalled/reinstalled a second time, just in case there was something in there (one of the *.ini's, for instance) screwing things up...

Hopefully the third uninstall/reinstall will do the trick... At least I have FIOS. With my old connection I'd still be doing the first reinstallation...

*Coming from someone who knows nothing about registry files* Are there any registry files associated with the installation of the game? If so I would look there, but I'm guessing no.

Not sure how steam handles such stuff...

Still, not sure how a reg file could function essentially as an in game script...

Still broken with new patch.... Sigh.

I was really enjoying the game and had just gotten to where the plot started to open up. And I had finally found the sniper rifle I was looking for. I have yet to be able to successfully equip it... :(

Found a temporary, if annoying, solution.

If I equip a weapon, then leave "Weapons" for a different pip-boy menu, then leave pip-boy, the weapon will stay equipped. Good... 'Cause I was really looking forward to playing this weekend. :)

did you map your pipboy to enter maybe? because i noticed that enter keeps its (un)activate function even when you map it to something else. so every time you turn off your pipboy, you (un)activate the thing that is selected at that time. (that's what happened to me anyway. keps using stims for no reason, taking off armors...)
