Can we fight FOR the dragons?

Post » Mon May 07, 2012 11:32 am

So I was watching the new developer diary and one of the lines said in the video "Your destiny is surely bound up with the return of the dragons." got me to thinking.

Could we actually go through and help the dragons fulfill their plans? I kind of doubt it but it would be a really cool way to add to the replay. I mean I guess we could just go through and pretend that's what we were doing without any official backing quests/ story behind it but it wouldn't be the same.

edit: If you know the answer, please try to keep it empty of spoilers to the best of your ability.

well, I don't think the whole 'dragons are destroying everything so you must destroy dragons' will turn out to be as black and white as it sounds. After all, you do have the soul of one

Bethesda has always been good at giving you lots of places to go and things to do, but typically the main quest gives the player zero input.

We'll see, though. It would be nice if they took a few notes on the things people really enjoyed from FO:NV (the choices being a large part of that).

I was thinking that too but I wonder just how far into that concept the team went. I know they tend to leave some awesome things out though, which is of course expected with a game this big.

Seeing as how you are the dragon born. I doubt it. There's no way the dragon's would want you because it is their ultimate goal to destroy you.

Unless you were role playing a...well..simpleton..there would be no reason for any character to not fight back against the dragons who are trying to kill you at all costs.

I do appreciate the speculation though.

For me, I am firmly on Bethesda's side when it comes to choices like this. Every choice doesn't have to decide the fate of the world for it to be fun and have meaning. It's also completely unrealistic. Witcher 2 and even The Witcher itself were fun games but I didn't like that. Every 10 seconds I was deciding the fate of some village or some priest and the story ultimately suffered (to me) due to having to program and balance so many different story branches.

I would rather make more realistic decisions (Do I use this group of friends for my own gain? do i help those people? Do I rob that guy?) and enjoy a well told story then to have one thousand branching options because someone somewhere wanted to have the option to marry a dragon instead of kill it.

Well I would say fighting for the dragons and helping their agenda would be a lot different than marrying a dragon.

Thanks for the input though.

I guess it would take pretty much an entire separate main story to do what I was thinking though. Disappointing. :sadvaultboy:

Then why should we be fighting Alduin at the end? To see who shouts harder?

You still are expected to fulfill the Elder Scrolls Prophecies so I would say not.

You can help the dragons destroy Nirn by killing yourself. With the dragonborn gone nothing can stop them.

But you can't buy any future ES games because you destroyed that world.

We wouldn't be fighting him, we'd be working for him which I guess would take a separate story line.

True. I guess we are a little more limited than would seem. Maybe we can do something about with Elder Scrolls: VI.

Haha yeah they are, I wasn't referring to you specifically there. Just anyone in general.

We really don't know anything about this stuff yet though. We will have to wait until its released.

I should admit I don't know much lore at all, barely any to be honest so what I suggested might be out of question completely according to what The Elder Scrolls say. :spotted owl:

I have been wondering and hoping for this myself. Dragons and Shouts are all related to Alduin, more so than the other Aedra at least, and we know the Dragon Soul is a gift from the gods. Well, what if it was Alduin? Perhaps he meant for us to use our power to help him.

I always thought of the Dragon situation with the soul absorption and what not as similar to Highlander.

There can be only one!

If you understand the lore behind this, I don't see any remotely sensible person WOULD fight for the dragons.

There is no favourable outcome, Alduins motivations - as far as can be understood, are not mortal-friendly and has no reason to make them mortal friendly. As someone said the best way you can help the dragons is to kill yourself

thats not their goal, you are just in the way of their real goal to help alduin eat the world

using that, it would be in your worst intrests to help alduiin, he is eating the world, you will be eaten along with it, only the most omnicidle idiot would help alduin (if the omnicidle person has any intelligence he woudl just hide in the realms of oblivion, not helping nor hindering alduin, and safely out of the way)

That's exactly the point. Perhaps that character isn't sane, perhaps he is just against all of society and wants to "set the world on fire".

But... what if I want a near-omnicidal cataclysm to wash away all the weakness and decadence of the human and demi-human races, so that I can lead the remains of man- and merkind to a brighter tomorrow? :(

Doubt it. Bethesda never lets you side with the bad guys in the MQ because that means the end of the world. They gave us the Legion and Stormcloaks so we can decide who to join in the war, but joining the dragons means the end of the world. I don't WANT to join them because there's literally no reason to other than insanity.
