After playing Skyrim on my PS 3 over the last year I finally caved-in and bought it for my X Box so I could experience all of the downloadable content Bethesda has created for it. I bought Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn this afternoon. The game seems to be running smoothly off of the disk. I've seen several older posts all over the internet regarding texture glitches on the X Box if the game is installed. Has this problem been fixed adequately, or should I continue to just play the game off of the disk without installing it?
This problem was fixed in patch 1.3, many months ago, so you shouldn't have any problems installing it to your HDD. In fact, it is advisable to do that, because if you run it from disk, Skyrim keeps the DVD spinning because it constantly has to loads chunks of the game in (it uses a dynamic load system). This constant spinning of the DVD drive will generate a little extra heat, and, depending upon the ventilation around your Xbox, can cause your console to get hot during long periods of play (i.e. hot electronics increases electrical resistance, which creates more heat, creating a positive feedback loop that can overheat your console). Installing Skyrim to your HDD will allow the DVD drive to turn itself off after about 30 seconds of play, thus preventing any excess heat building up. Also, the seek time of the HDD is much faster, so the game will load quicker.
