I just became master of the thieves guild and went to go improve my guild master armor, when i got the workbench the pieces were grayed out and if i tried them to craft them it said "You lack the perk to improve magical items". My smithing is at 100, i grabbed that perk a long time ago and have most defiantly improved countless magical items before today, I can look at the smithing skill tree and see its quite obviously there.

Anyone know a fix for this? I already tried half a dozen console commands from removing the perk and adding it again to trying to get a level up to add it manually but i couldn't level up (it wouldn't let me for some odd reason).

I'm a theif, i like the theives guild armors and i want to improve them, if this cant be fixed im either going to have to live with baseline theives guild/ nightengale armor or start my game over again which i'd really like not to do.

Can you improve other magical armour?

I think this may be erroneously in the wrong list so you can't improve it...I seem to recall a mod on Skyrim Nexus which fixes it but I can't find it right now.

Some items cant be upgraded, bug or ment to be I have no clue, but thats how it is. I asume you can upgrade other items?

Let me rephrase it: can you still upgrade other magical items? Trying rule out if it's a problem with the perk.

I just tried some enchanted ebony gauntlets and a random enchanted dwarven sword, both were no go's, still says i don't have the perk.

is there any kind of console command to make it sort of dump its current calculations and recalculate stats?

I get an error message about being unable to upgrade magical items, but only certain items.

Like 2 Superior steel items with enchantments that had them already. Boots and Gauntlets I think.

Yet I can upgrade other items that already had enchantments when I got them.

It was just these two...so far.

But now I'm wondering if there is glitch...because they were the last two I tried to upgrade ( To Flawless ) before I logged out and I thought maybe it was either because they were such high level enchantments ( 50 % fire resistance on the boots and 30% One handed combat on the gloves ) and that I was missing perk...or maybe because of a glitch.

It's weird though..when I was upgrading everything the boots and gloves were greyed out even though other stuff was white and I had no problem with those.
Thought maybe it was because I didn't have the material but I did...

It just says you don't have the ability or perk ( whatever ! ) to do this...

This may be related to reported bugs in other skills - like sneak - which appear to go haywire when the skill reaches 100. Might be worth searching the forums for that issue as well.

My level is only mid 60s

So maybe I don't have the perk / level necessary ( I have the upgrade magical item perk ) but I didn't look further up the perk chain and I'm at work so can't check.

Update: it would appear to have ironed itself out somehow. I was just messing with commands, trying different things to fix it and the last time i went to the grindstone i noticed i could finally improve the iron dagger of shock i grabbed for testing.

Thanks for everyone trying to help, I've not really had any bugs with the game until i got the thieves guild, seems that faction has more than a few problems (Guild master ceremony wouldn't start either. had to advance it by console), which is a shame
