I can't see my body, legs and feet..Engine limitation perhap

Post » Thu Oct 25, 2012 4:29 pm

Before the game released I thought there will be a "real" 1st person view just like Arkane's previous game Dark Messiah.

Don't get me wrong I love this game. I just think it will be perfect that the PC is no longer a camera floating in the air!

Besides, why guards can kick while I cannot!? And why I can preform super kool slide-kick with some mysterious telekinetic forces but not my legs?

P.S Source Engine FTW! Unreal Engine looks nice, but it is flawed.

I was also wondering about that. Dark Messiah and even the much older Arx Fatalis had the visible 1st person features.

And yes, agreed about the kicking, it's even more annoying when you are fighting againts a group of officers who have this nasty habit of kicking you into nuts everytime they deflect your attack. Give us a possibility to return the favour!

Well, obviously you cannot kick somebody with nothing.

Recently I am revisiting Dark Messiah and..damn I wish I could use those nasty kicks in Dishonored, too! Oh at least give me a bashing ability just like the one in Skyrim...

I still don't understand why they used the Unreal Engine. It is so outdated (especially its horrible physics!).

While I do agree - I would have prefered Source over UE3 - I think Arkane did a good job with the visuals. It's actually the first UE3-based game that I like for its graphics. No joke; ME, Bioshock, Frontlines, Spec Ops: TL, Batman AA all had a clunky, plasticy and superficial feel to it, that derived from the Engine itself. Arkane somehow achieved a very deep and yet elegant look.

Just to show how good the game can look, I take the liberty to post some screens by jim2point0 from the steam forums:

Needs a little tinkering, but even as an AMD user you can get similar results
Biggest flaw of UE3 has always been no native support of AA, if you ask me...

Sorry for the hijack btw.

And yes, I too would have welcomed a "real" 1st person view, as it worked out really nicely in Dark Messiah.

A few reasons:

Sometimes it can be distracting to look at and can hurt field of view. Dishonored already takes up far too much space with the weapon models taking up 1/3 of the screen (stupid idea on the part of the devs too).

Animating legs properly is very difficult considering the acrobatics the player can get up to. It could look very strange or glitchy, and you might notice stuff like how you're actually floating instead of walking on surface.

It's ultimately a very small thing to put time and effort into considering the rest of the game.

It's not an engine limitation, it was a design decision. Both Mirror's Edge and Thief 3 have bodies and use the Unreal engine.

Anyway, Dan Todd made a post about this not long ago.
Regarding the body awareness, I think this has been touched on before by some of our producers. It, plus the player's shadow, has a deceptively high production cost for art/animation, as well as for graphics memory. We are Arkane are big fans of it, (it was done in Arx and Dark Messiah, after all) but it's not always possible to do.

So once again we see that if Arkane had a bit (lot?) more funding, DIshonored would have been that much closer to real brilliance.

personally i dont like seeing the body. it always looks silly, a screen cont properly convey the way you actually see your own body IRL

Having used the Unreal Engine, I feel it is more than capable of creating realistic-looking graphics. The accessibility of the engine is why it's so popular with developers. I will agree about the physics though; I once tried to design a stacking puzzle and found I could solve it by jumping on the box and flying up with it.

I don't think full body character model is anything to do with the game engine. Mirror's Edge uses Unreal 3 as well.
