Can someone explain FOV (Field of View)

Post » Wed May 09, 2012 7:16 pm

A lot of people are telling me that I should change the FOV to 90 so it feels more "natural", but I don't really know what it does or why I should do it. Can someone please explain?

Thanks!

I didn't even know you could? Is that in the advanced graphic settings?

It is how much you can see.. Think of it this way, when you zoom in with a scope in first person shooters, the FOV decreases. You see less on the sides and it focuses in on the center.
That's low FOV. Increasing the FOV to 90 means that the screen renders 90 degrees in front of your character, which is pretty natural compared to real life. (though as you know, in real life we have very wide vision, almost up to 180 degrees, but that would look weird on a monitor).

So in essence, if your computer can handle rendering a little bit more on the sides, increasing the FOV to 90 or such will let you see more of the world in front of your characters eyes, rather than being mr magoo :)

We have very wide vision but our actual focus is very pinpoint. I always thought that this is what FOV tried to simulate, focus on one letter in a word on your screen. Then without moving your eyes try to read clearly the next three words... they aren't CLEAR are they?

*edit*
This is also why you have to move your eyes across the screen to read, instead of staring at the center and reading everything perfectly.

I too would like to know how to change the FOV.

In Oblivion you had to type "fov 90" into the console. Try that.
